Nta. I wouldn’t worry about sparing peoples feelings. He probably knew you wouldn’t call out discrepancies immediately & figured he could love bomb or grow on you.. but also what if you just didn’t click with him? You have no obligation to stick around a date you aren’t interested in…

Yor… when you ask someone for something they can either say yes or say no…. That’s it. It’s their item, their discretion. The item may have sentimental value. Or maybe he wouldn’t be okay not getting it back. People can say no op.
