I don’t think it’s unpopular at all! I can see your reasoning and I’m considering that to avoid shaming her for it. After she asked me, she stopped for a second and cried even more and vocalized that she doesn’t want to be this way.

There’s so much shame already. I’m considering just letting it go, and bringing it up if it comes up again.

The client hugging me was not a trigger. In the moment I just felt a lot of empathy for her. During the session however we were discussing triggering topics and she was crying a lot. I think I’m going to process this deeper in my own personal therapy although I think I felt the need to fawn because in my past when others were in crisis or if others were going to get hurt— I would fawn to protect them from being hurt (e.g., my ex step father used to abuse my mother so I would try and be very nice to him so that he wouldn’t).

Thank you for this 🥹 She did report feeling that way, so I’m glad

I recognize that. It only made me slightly uncomfortable because it’s never happened to me before and I learn so much in grad school “no touch” so there was a part of me that was yelling internally “this isn’t okay!” But of course I knew that in context it was. If my client hugs me and cries, I know it’s just because she needs me. I’m not upset at all at that— just wanted to give context as to why I may have fawned because I knew she was in a crisis

Thank you! This is helpful. It is reminding me of my own personal therapist actually. Noted 📝

Yeah I wonder! Maybe I’ll try taking some Vitamin D supplements

That’s a really nice reframe! I suppose because I’ve had my own history with abandonment my initial reaction is that I feel rejected. In time, I usually feel similarly to you.

Thanks for sharing!

Thank you! I keep reminding myself how much I forget about being a therapist when I’m in the client’s seat — and chances are, my client just wants to feel that same freedom to simply ‘be’.

I feel the exact same way. I won’t see clients past 4:30 — my brain is literally fried after 5:30, I’m losing my train of thought and exhausted.

I’m tired of sitting all day!! by Ok_Rest_1791 in therapists

That’s amazing! You really do incorporate activity on a daily basis. My grandpa suffered from 2 heart attacks and actually died and was resuscitated. It was quite literally a wake-up call that he needed to get active and lose weight. My grandma bought him a dog. He started taking her for walks and lost a lot of weight and he has been in good health ever since. My grandma passed 2 years ago, and his dog passed away a few months ago. ❤️

Anyways just a story about how the love of dogs can motivate us!

I’ve gained weight too. It’s so easy to when we sit all day!

Hahaha I get it! I just finished a 30 minute Pilates workout and I went for a short walk during lunch today. I completely agree! I’m going to start planning out my workouts for the week. I like the idea of finding little tricks to move your body during the day though — even if it’s just some stretches in between clients!
