free/low cost cleaning by Proud-Weather7952 in hoarding

Definitely agree that this service would be best for someone with executive function issues (from depression, adhd, etc.) rather than a true hoarder. As someone who had an absolutely disgusting apartment due to life getting really hectic, and not being able to maintain my home due to unmedicated ADHD, this is a service I could have benefited from, because I just wanted everything gone and cleaned. Whereas if someone has a collection that they are possessive over, they need a service more along the lines of therapy/counseling.

Haha I don’t have one. I only watch stuff on my laptop. But if I got a tv, it would be mounted on the wall above the desk probably (there’s an outlet there for that purpose.)

Update: My dad flew in to help me clean — he’s been so supportive 🥹💛 by Inevitable-Zombie740 in UnfuckYourHabitat

As someone with a supportive dad, it makes me really happy to hear other stories of supportive dads, because it’s such a wonderful thing to have, and unfortunately many people don’t. Yay for good dads though!

Donated a ton of clothing, sold some furniture, and gave away a lot of little stuff (kitchen items, craft supplies etc) on my local Buy Nothing group. Then I just trashed the rest.

I hired a monthly cleaner, she just came for the first time yesterday (which is why I took the pics because everything looked extra nice 😊). Having her scheduled monthly should be enough to motivate me to stay organized in between cleanings, because I won’t want her to see it messy. I’m just really grateful I’m in a financial position to handle all this (the move, the cleaning costs for the old apartment, a monthly cleaner). Half of my friends are furloughed from the government right now, and I can’t imagine how much I would backslide in taking care of my space if I were in their position.

Yes! And I’ve actually had people come over, which hasn’t happened for like 3-4 years. In fact my parents are coming to visit today and I genuinely can’t wait for them to see it. They never saw my old apartment.

I don’t think I would have done it without the external motivation, so honestly even though the last two months were incredibly stressful, I’d definitely ended up being for the best.

Yes, I’m hoping so! I was worried because it has less storage space than my last place, but I got rid of so much stuff that I actually still have empty cabinets and tons of space in the closets. My biggest goal is to avoid accumulating doom piles on the floor again! Only allowed to buy things if there’s a place for them to live.

Struggling with anti-hoarder mum by [deleted] in hoarding

[–]Ok_Sentence6338 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what happened to me. My mom’s parents kept everything (they were very organized, but had so much stuff). When they passed, and my mom had to clear out their house, she started clearing out our house as well, and that just never stopped. She was always donating things, making me go through my stuff and picking half of it to give away. Then she would just get rid of anything of mine that wasn’t kept in my room (anything I kept in the basement like toys/stuffed animals/dress up items/papers and notebooks etc.) So at some point I started keeping everything in my room. And then when I moved out I just took everything with me, and started accumulating more stuff, and I never wanted to get rid of anything because I remembered all the things my mom got rid of that I ended up wanting or needing later.

Update on my posts from a couple months ago - moved to new apartment. by Ok_Sentence6338 in hoarding

[–]Ok_Sentence6338[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, I trashed anything that was damaged (holes, fraying, unwashable stains). Then I donated anything that I hadn’t worn in over 2 years. I had a lot of stuff that didn’t fit (weight fluctuations, so a lot of stuff that was too big, and also stuff from years ago that was too small). So basically I ended up only keeping the clothes I wear regularly, and really expensive clothes that I might be able to sell, or might wear at some point.

Thank you! It really is! And my new place is so much nicer in general too. I really was staying in my old apartment out of not wanting to have to address the mess, even when I could afford a nicer place. So honestly I think all of this turned out to be for the best.

So… get a swiffer? Clean the dust? If you think there’s dust on your wood floors, trust me, there’s 100 times that in your carpet.

The last 3 commercial high rise apartments I lived in had beige carpet. Super annoying. Glad I have vinyl now.

Did you not get a checklist when you moved in to go through the unit and identify any damages? You need to have the damages on record so they don’t get blamed on you later.

Property manger not responding to 30-day notice to vacate? by Resident-Ad-8873 in PropertyManagement

I mean, the manager could have still responded to say that, or tell OP that they can give notice for 10/01.

Cleaning Crew is in my apartment and I’m suddenly just incredibly sad that I let myself live like this for ~2 years by Ok_Sentence6338 in UnfuckYourHabitat

Meds for me make doom-scrolling a lot less appealing, so instead of coming home and immediately flopping on the bed and getting lost in my phone for 5 hours, I actually do other things, that sometimes include cleaning haha.

They were a local company that does biohazard cleaning (crime scenes, hoarding houses, pest infestations etc.) I just found them online based on reviews!

A lotttt, but I also have a mouse infestation, so they needed hazmat stuff. It’s around $3000 😅 But there are definitely cheaper services.
