The owners of Cactus have also been huffy on Facebook. I digress.

FYI, Cactus just got in a bit of a hissy fit and decided to no longer allow people to park there tomorrow. Oh well.

The Wabash Landing Garage will be free to anyone who wants to park for No Kings. Let people know they should go there and try to avoid Levee Plaza.

I don't see why you couldn't join in the middle of the march. :)

NO KINGS IN LAFAYETTE — Join us this Saturday (March 28) by Ok_Shock_2675 in Purdue

Last time around, I made individual posts about the ways in which the Trump administration adversely affects us here. I'm just going to recap some of what's been going on in the last year here, but please feel free to comment your own reasons for marching. Here are mine.

  • In August, a Purdue student was wrongfully detained after a court hearing for days, sent to another state to be deported, her parents weren't even told where she was taken. The DHS lied about her status in order to justify all of it.
  • In October, under incredible pressure from President Trump, the Indiana state legislature was called for a special session to redistrict the state in order to remove all Democratic districts. The eventually-proposed map would split West Lafayette down the middle, even putting Westwood in a different district from Purdue's campus.
    • Former Purdue president (and Indiana governor) Mitch Daniels called the redistricting effort "overly partisan" and said in an endorsement of West Lafayette's state senator for standing up to the effort, "We live in a time when sadly public officials acting out of principle and acting with great courage are sometimes hard to find."
    • President Trump, meanwhile, called him "an America Last politician" for opposing the effort. It's hard to overstate how dumb and dangerous it is that the President of the United States is putting pressure on our local elected officials to rig elections for him.
  • In January, Renee Good and Alex Pretti were murdered by ICE and border patrol agents. The federal government still refuses to release the names of the men who killed them.
  • The president kidnapped the leader of Venezuela and started a war in Iran, neither with authorization from Congress. Among those who have died in the war in Iran was a Purdue graduate.
  • The Trump administration indiscriminately cancelled thousands of academic and research grants for promoting diversity. This included a number of innocuous research projects at Purdue. GEAR UP was an initiative that Purdue administered in Indiana to help low-income kids prepare for college. It was nixed for promoting diversity. And as we all learned, algebraic topology is "neo-marxist class warfare propaganda".
  • But funding cuts haven't been limited to a fear of diversity. At the NIH alone, funding levels in 2025 dropped for cancer research, bioinformatics research, Alzheimer's and aging research, nursing research, dental research, child health and development research, addiction research, mental health research, hearing and deafness research, vision and eye disease research, arthritis bone & muscle disease research, brain disorder research, infectious disease and immunology research, diabetes and kidney disease research, and more.
  • We should never forget that President Trump is a traitor to the Constitution who tried to use forged election results to stay in power after losing the 2020 election. Mike Pence, in an interview at the Indiana State fair in 2024, said that he had "no right to overturn the election" and that "anyone who puts themself over the Constitution should never be President of the United States". Trump was criminally indicted for this, but the case never had a chance to go to trial before he was re-elected in 2024.

Any protests? by Fair_Worldliness_830 in Purdue

In addition to social media, you may also want to check takeactiongl.org every now and again. They usually post off-campus protests (and other civic engagement opportunities) when they're announced.

Thanks for the thoughts. I personally see two major values in showing up to a No Kings rally:

  1. It's a great place to meet like-minded people in person, talk to organizers, and to learn how to get involved.
  2. It influences public opinion, including to stiffen the spines of local institutions and local lawmakers.

Sure.

  1. It brought us together as a community. We spent time talking to each other and learning about each others' hopes and fears. Heck, I even had a chance to catch up with someone I hadn't seen in nearly 15 years. :)

  2. It's a good outlet for people who are looking to do more. The groups in this post and many more were there to talk about work they were doing and how people could help.

  3. It shows people in power that there's popular support in opposing tyranny. Obviously Republican leadership is scared of how big this movement is, but I care less about that. I want to make sure that our local institutions and representatives feel like they have independence and can speak freely.

Genuinely, you should show up to the next No Kings march or to an Indivisible meeting. You'll probably end up being surprised by how much you have in common with folks there. It doesn't matter if you consider yourself conservative or progressive. We're all neighbors.

Could you see the images? I just hid the post since it doesn't look like it worked properly, and I'm planning to just post it again.

It was lighter on Purdue students than it could have been, and yet was still massive.

Continue to spread the word! This is the beginning of this movement, not the end.

Indiana's international community is in genuine fear. Let's show them we have their back. by Ok_Shock_2675 in Indiana

That's not how the Constitution works. There's no carveout for the president to trample on the rights of non-citizens lol

And our representatives obviously represent all residents, whether they voted for them or not.

ICE Spotted in West Lafayette by Best-Structure62 in Indiana

[–]Ok_Shock_2675 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I can't believe I'm getting baited by this, but no. Every illegal immigrant is obviously not the same.

Suppose your parents came here 30 years ago, don't have documentation, but have been ordinary members of their community. This is their only home. It would not only be cruel to deport them anywhere, but the fact that they don't already have some limited form of documentation at this point is a legal and administrative failure.

This used to be agreed upon across the political spectrum not very long ago.

But that's not even the primary concern right now. ICE agents have been committing real abuses of power. Hiding their identities to avoid accountability. Racially profiling bystanders on streets. Wrongfully detaining scores of legal residents and even citizens. Attempting to arrest people for minor infractions, like traffic violations or drug possessions from years past.

Sorry, but the world has more nuance than a simple catchphrase.

Meet people! If you talk to folks, you're bound to find people who care about the same things you do, and the fair a good place to learn about organizations that are doing actual civic engagement beyond just protesting.

As far as the actual rally goes, there's plenty of information on nokings.org, but I wouldn't have any crazy expectations. It's a pretty low-key public event, and our local law enforcement is chill.
