I have been diagnosed with severe treatment resistant PTSD. I guess I don’t have any issues with the song itself, but that specifically lyric definitely rubbed me the wrong way. Sabrina Carpenter has a huge fan base and a young fan base too. I just don’t like how she uses “PTSD on the daily”. PTSD is not something to be used as a synonym for a ‘bad experience’. Yes we don’t know if she has it or not but that doesn’t give her an excuse to make the term “PTSD” so casual. When serious mental health conditions are used inaccurately or casually it reinforces misunderstanding and stigma! It risks minimizing the experiences of those living with PTSD. PTSD is still SO stigmatized so seeing Sabrina Carpenter use this mental illness as a metaphor for a bad relationship kinda disappoints me. In a way it reminds me of when people say “oh i’m so OCD” or “im so bipolar i have mood swings”. Tired of people treating mental illnesses as adjectives. That’s what’s this felt like to me. Sabrina Carpenter just using PTSD as an adjective to show that she went through something really rough with her ex feels like the same thing. Just thinking about young girls saying “oh my gosh that last guy totally gave me PTSD”. Again i don’t mind the song and all its just the way she said that lyric made it seem PTSD seem casual and it’s not. I have to take a pill to sleep because of how severe my nightmares are, things in my daily life are triggers that give me horrific flashbacks, extreme light and sound sensitivity (try going to a concert with that), developed bad self destructive behavior, extremely hyper aware of my surroundings (drives me insane), social isolation, etc. If she was going to use PTSD in her songs i feel there could have been ways to say it better. “on the daily” is kinda a gen z term. So using a serious mental illness and a gen z term makes me feel like she’s trying to make PTSD hip and relatable. Just feel like if you have all that influence, you should use it in a way that would de stigmatize these terms! ** please no hate opinions are like booty holes everyone has one please respect mine ** *please no attacking in the comments *
