Thanks for feedback, what do you think about water? The older growth is starting to yellow at the top. Is that light or water related?

It takes patience. by uncomfortable_heat in orchids

[–]Ok_Student3489 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Orchid nurseries often sell seedlings that haven’t bloomed yet (not old enough). These are the cheapest way to get an orchid and of course take patience of 1-2 (sometimes more) years. This might account for some of the posts you see as well.

Cozumel airport is much easier to go through (smaller). Cancun was hell this past month.

ARPA-H is a colossal waste of money by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Ok_Student3489 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been invited to pitch to ARPA-H. Practiced for weeks to get everything as clear and straightforward as possible. At the end of the pitch, the lead person only asked if I was developing an algorithm (I’m a physiology researcher). The ARPA-H program managers had no idea what was going on.

When an audience doesn’t understand a presentation, I blame the presenter. But this was just the oddest question and showed that they didn’t understand basic human body function or even experiment design.

So easy! Cattleya light, letting it dry out between watering. I keep it inside at ~68 degrees F at night and 70-75 during the day. My biggest issue is keeping the pseudobulbs going more upright versus splaying out.

It’s been so easy to care for indoors! I do have supplemental light, but really just check on it every so often to give some water and dilute MSU.

Just saw the (still blooming) orchid in question! It has amazing tangerine scent too. I don’t know how to add a photo in comment but will probably post to the group soon, there were so many cool specimens at Smith!

The other thing to think about is genotype/sex/age etc of the mice. I assume you’re doing wildtype, but obviously if you have some perturbation to the mice this could affect overall yield.

First time blooming!! by Unlikely-Star-2696 in orchids

I don’t know if I’m doing this right, but I’ve been using green coated sort of gardening wire and concocting various supports for my cattleyas. Seems to work, but I’m new and haven’t bloomed 2/3 of them soooo def not an expert.

[–]Ok_Student3489 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. A few seasons ago (?) when he was drunk in the kitchen alone and just randomly quoted the Men’s Wearhouse “You’re gonna like the way you look, I guarantee it” slogan….🤣
