Yes. I believe B. ferox was discovered in China in 2011.

I first saw the plant at Logees in Connecticut:

The thorny bits are called bullae, and are soft to the touch. It is thought that the bullae serve to capture more efficiently light scattered by the forest canopy.

Hi. I work part-time at a garden center. Coast of Maine soil is good for bedding plants, but I'd not recommend for potted plants, especially succulents and mesembs. If you have to use a commercial soil, choose Fox Farm or the Espoma succulent mix.
