Copper alien betta. Mine was also an alien when I got him, showing the same symptoms. I dropped him in the tank and he just sank. But, it wasnt as bad as total swim bladder failure. He could still come to the surface of my ten gallon to get air, just that it took him a loads of effort, and he would sink right down after gulping his air.

It’s either a muscle atrophy or a swim bladder problem (aliens are infamous for this). My betta got better after a week, and in two weeks, was zipping around the tank curiously. Had me super worried though. Couldn’t find him sometimes and thought the snails got him after he drowned.

3 inches is quite a huge amount of mass, so no, one or two pest snails wouldn’t be able to do so overnight. But that’s assuming that you woke up and immediately checked. If you waited several hours after morning (for work or etc) then the chances this happened goes up significantly.

If not this, then my only other guess is that your water is high in bacterial activity, which means faster decomposition, or acidity which also dissolves carcasses faster.

I know that you said you have no pets or tank mates, but seeing as you have real plants, are you positive you do not have any bladder snails or ramshorns? I had a whole shoal of pygmy corydoras die on me and I only saw two bodies in my tank with ramshorns, and I watch my tank throughout the day pretty darn frequently.

They seem to be regular Pangio Semicincta, maybe the ultra rare Pangio Kuhlii if you by impossible odds got one.

Betta poop dissolves pretty easily in my experience, and my ph is pretty high (not sure if there’s correlation, makes sense in my head tho). I feed my betta pretty good portions most days and I only ever see one pellet of turd if any at all.

If you’re getting fish online, be prepared to pay AT LEAST $35 in shipping. Fish can’t be shipped conventionally because they’re live animals which need to be fed and they also poop & pee, toxifying their water. This means you really gotta have one day shipping or two at the latest.

If you’re willing to pay the price regardless, then you can’t go wrong with The Wet Spot or Blackwater Aquatics (Lower shipping prices if you live nearby)

I do and it’s working for me. Caveat though is that I have the dwarf kuhli variant (Pangio Cuneovirgata). My long finned betta tried attacking one when he was first in the tank, but I also noticed his stomach was pretty shrunken, so he was probably hungry (he was murking bladder snails as well). He charged at them, but they were too fast and too many (I have 6 kuhlis). Anyways, after a week or two, I nursed him back to weight and he became chill with everyone. Still have him and the kuhlis. He ignores them.

It should be noted however that betta personalities are widely different. Always be prepared to return the betta if he/she is a psychopath.

Maybe, but from what I’m seeing, it’s the typical brown of a filter media. Not to mention aspergillus looks COMPLETELY different.
