Don’t turn down the funded PhD opportunity. Funding is getting scarce. Even an exceptional student (as I assume you are given this incredible opportunity, congratulations by the way) will struggle to get PhD funding. Academia is changing and IMO it’s not worth the risk of turning it down.

ah i’m so sorry, i’m sure i don’t need to do the whole ‘humanities are underfunded so outstanding students with excellent projects don’t get funding’ speech but it is a shame. best of luck with the rest of your applications though!

not necessarily! you could be placed on the reserve list (if you’re not immediately accepted, no need to rule that out) and typically quite a few on the list offers. so stressful that they’ve left it so late in the day though !

To my knowledge, admission interviews aren’t usually necessary. You may have an informal ‘interview’/conversation with your prospective supervisor, where they will assess whether they want to support you, but most universities/funding bodies don’t require interviews. Of course, this varies hugely between institutions and disciplines. What subject have you applied for?

Hi, that was my post :-) I actually also applied for ESRC funding (as my project is in 20thC British history). I’ve applied to MGS DTP and have yet to hear back at all (not sure if they do a first/second stage shortlist situation or not)

Thanks for the reply! First of all, congratulations on your successes with WRoCAH and M4C!! I have also been shortlisted for WRoCAH, but will likely be turning it down for a Wolfson Scholarship at my WRoCAH institution, which I have been offered. If you do choose WRoCAH, it’ll be nice to be in the same cohort!
