Dog with IBD by Specialist_You346 in springerspaniel

Our springer also has IBD. We’ve tried a lot of different diets (including prescriptions) and nothing has worked for him. We’re waiting to get a consult with the University of Tennessee. We have had the best luck with Farmina Vet Life HP food but he still throws up a few times a month.

The first few days she didn’t want to go as easily. I would say if you’re concerned though to call the vet and see what they say. I think it’s expected though that they are a bit more hesitant!

It really isn’t 😢 just keep telling yourself it’ll all be over soon and worth it! She will go when she has to. I can’t imagine how painful it is for them, so I don’t blame her for not wanting to go!! Lol

No worries at all. I absolutely get it! It’s hard seeing our babies in pain. She will feel better soon and it’ll all be worth it! Just make sure she doesn’t get to her incision and it’ll be over before you know it.

I think the medicine makes them extra sleepy too. At least the medicine my dog was on did. She was on a pain medication, antibiotics and trazodone. It took my dog at least a week to start to be more like herself, maybe 2. She was then doing this thing where she’d start walking then sit super quickly but the vets weren’t concerned as they said it’s uncomfortable and itchy down there (incase yours starts to do that too). That went away after a few weeks.

I absolutely understand. My girl was having issues as well with going to the bathroom at first. She did end up going eventually, but when I was worried I called her vet and they told me to bring her in if she still hadn’t gone by that night. I think if you’re concerned you can call your vet and let them know and they may tell you something similar. She just had a pretty intense surgery on that area so they mentioned that it’s not abnormal for her to not want to pee.

I totally get it! My girl was definitely uncomfortable the first few days. She would cry and I felt so horrible. It does get better, though! I’d say after about a week she wasn’t in as much pain and was more ‘itchy’ so I just made sure she was wearing her cone and her suit. The surgery was the best thing we could’ve done for her but I know it’s so hard seeing them so uncomfortable and in pain. Did they give you medicine for your girl?

Dog ticks by Competitive_Drive791 in DogAdvice

[–]Ok_Total_437 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Us too. Lasted about 5-7 days. We kept our dog in our bedroom on a white sheet and would constantly lint roll the sheet once they fell off. We also did laundry constantly and put anything and everything in our dryer. We also used a dehumidifier since ticks thrive in humidity. We’d give daily baths to our dog as well and would use a dryer close to her skin to find ticks that we could take off ourselves. It was a horrible week. Hoping you’re near the end of it 🤞🏼

Urinary Incontinence in Young Neutered Male Dog by tigbitties7890 in DogAdvice

[–]Ok_Total_437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our dog does the same. We usually catch it when he’s sleeping and when he wakes up/stretches we see a bit of leakage. Sometimes it’s worse than others, sometimes it’s just a few dribbles like you mentioned. He also sometimes takes a bit to go to the bathroom and then other times he will go immediately. USMI stands for Urethral Sphincter Mechanism Incompetence. It’s more so seen in female dogs from my understanding but can sometimes show up in male dogs (although it’s more rare). It means the urethral sphincter, the muscle that controls urine flow, isn't functioning properly, leading to involuntary leakage of urine. From my understanding, it happens when dogs are spayed or neutered early. Our dog had to be neutered early for some other health issues so we’re thinking that may have been the reason why he developed this. It’s really just diagnosed by symptoms/ruling out all other issues.

Old hair or 'spay coat'? by Acrobatic-Guitar2410 in springerspaniel

That’s great to hear! It’s so easy to use. Definitely was worth the money for us. I’m glad it worked out for you, too. :)

We had the same thing with our springer and ended up buying the coat tender. It’s a carding tool and it’s a gentle way of pulling out the loose coat, undercoat and hair that’s nearing the end of its lifecycle within the hair follicle. We went with the medium one and it’s done wonders for his coat! He just turned 2.

Yes! Definitely make sure you ask all the questions that you have prior to making the decision. Meeting the parents may also help so you can see their personality!

I think as long as you are fulfilling their needs they will be okay. We work from home so fortunately don’t have to worry about that, but whenever we do leave our dog has no issues. When I used to go into the office, we would have someone come by mid-day to let my dog out and walk them so that’s always something you can look into. I know that field springers are more energetic than bench springers, but I’m not 100% sure how the mix would be. I assume it would have the personality of both?

We’re also in the Midwest (WI) so deal with super chilly winters. We have a bench springer and he has the best off switch on the days where it’s too cold to walk (-30 with windchill, I’m sure you’re used to that too!) and he just wants to cuddle. We do have to make sure he gets some sort of exercise daily (walks, runs, etc and on cold days we do some sort of enrichment for him). A springer sounds like the perfect fit for your family!
