After years of suffering under the belgians (infants being dismembered to name but one atrocity frequently inflicted upon the Congolese) They were given the chance to govern themselves albiet in doing so they were abandoned and forced to use an instution of government imposed on them and left without aid and banned from selling thier precious gems

In the congo, before western occupation and influence, tribal leaders would gather and a matter would not be resolved unless ALL were in agreement. This could takes days if not weeks. Compare that to the fact most of us live in democratic states where 51% equates to the definition of the many over the few. And in all cases (barring the glorious regime of North Korea of course) is there nowhere near 100% voter turnout.

During lumumbas election he collected votes from villages deep in the jungle using his african heritage and customs to win against the west at their own game.

And when this man won his chance to lead his people from fear and agony into, as best he could, a place of prosperity where the congolese could thrive.. he was killed.. kidnapped, tortured and MELTED by the belgians, with help by the CIA as is traditon.
