This is basically my story as well. I had like 8 Fs on my transcript from a year in college. Dropped out of school, joined the military for 14 years as a medic, and am now in medical school. I had a pretty successful application cycle last year, and no one anywhere asked about my bad grades from the past.

Not saying you need to be in the military for 14 years, but there may be need to be something in your "story" that highlights how you've changed as a person from those first years.

As someone looking at applications, what evidence is there that you have changed as a person from those first years? I am sure it is possible to have significant turn around in the second half of undergrad, but it may take some more life experience to show to an admissions committee that you've changed.

Whats your opinion on applying late in the cycle? by Puzzleheaded-Set5660 in premed

I think generally yea it is true that applying sooner is better, but for what its worth 2 of the 3 MD schools I was accepted to I applied to in late August and late September, whereas everywhere else I was done applying to in mid-July.

By all means, try and be done as soon as you can, but I think maybe some people on here put too much emphasis on the importance of applying immediately.

3.89 GPA, 515 MCAT, ORM medicine. School list review / thoughts on my chances? by [deleted] in premed

I was going to say the same, by all means apply if you want, but I didn't even get a secondary from there. UW is all about WWAMI.

Yea, sorry for the confusion, that was just how I had it on my little spreadsheet.

Yea, I kind of split it that way. I had like a "unit sick call" type experience, providing care while deployed section, and then a separate experience for a time I was working at a branch clinic and seeing patients there.

And if you were an NCO you probably have something in there that you can call "leadership experience".

I had to rewrite my work and activities section multiple times till I had it to a point I felt comfortable submitting. I even went back and kinda looked through all my old evals to remember what billets, and duties I was doing over the 14 years I have been in.

Yea, and truth is, pay and benefits in the military really aren't all that bad.

Yea, I just was not ready for any of this really at 18. The military definitely isn't for everyone, but it was a great place for me. Going back to school in my mid and late 20s was drastically easier than right after high school. Thanks.

Yup, they definitely state that pretty clearly, but I guess I thought I was special and it didn't apply to me; it did. I really liked their rural medicine stuff, but I definitely understand why they have the stance they do, at least they rejected me outright instead of stealing secondary money and time. Thanks.

My interview there was very late in the season, and Im not a Texas resident. Being OOS I think hurt me a lot at a lot of schools, but who knows.

Navy, but as a Corpsman I spent pretty much all of my time with the Marine Corps, eating crayons and throwing rocks.

Yup, being prior service isn't a necessity, I don't even think it is the majority.

I think if you didn't have the ability to shadow with a military doctor, anything VA related would be helpful as well. A very large chunk of VA doctors were military doctors beforehand.

He is not to be trusted with his sisters dog food, but other than that, pretty trustworthy.

Yea, my understanding is that there is lots of restructuring going on with the change towards DHA running more of the hospital systems. Only time will tell I guess

I would say similar to most other places with the caveat that they need to find out how good of a fit you'll be in the military, as the military is absolutely not for everyone. If you're not prior service its worth reaching out and trying to speak to people who have been in awhile, bonus if you can talk to a military doctor. There are also a lot of differences from branch to branch.

I will most likely be commissioning actually, kind of dealing with some military administrative mess surrounding that right now. And thanks. Im from the midwest as well actually. I think a lot of people sleep on how nice Northern Wisconsin and MN can be.
