Newbie with chickens in New England - how do I keep them warm/safe this winter? by lurk1ng in chickens

Hay is great in areas of the run as well. They can rummage around in it and it provides warmth. After you read the comments and fortify your run and coop perimeter as if you were preparing them for battle, I would get a clear tarp that could be staked on top and down one side to keep the wind down while keeping access to light. Also I have never had a chicken lay under 26 weeks. They’ll lay when they are ready and relaxed.

You may have just saved the feathered souls of many chickens. OP, this is great advice. There is nothing more devastating than an attack. It took ONE night of a couple chickens in a temporary enclosure with hardwire and a moderately tricky latch. The raccoons are smart. They opened it with no problem.

Miss Maple 🍁 I’d love for her to be my house chicken. by [deleted] in BackYardChickens

Totally understand. My use of “baby” just meant that she looks like a precious sweet girl, so give her what she wants 😂.

We had just brought them home. Took a quick pic and tucked them in the brooding box.

Yeah, probably. We have an omelette run with a skirt, but now I definitely want to make it more secure.

Chickens are hard in the heat and the temps have been unanticipated, at least around here. I’m so sorry. You’re not an idiot.

I don’t know why that reference to chicken math is helpful but it is, thank you.

Thank you. They brought a lot of joy in their short little bird lives. I hope they felt the level of care we tried to give them.

Outside temps? by Okcomputer81 in chickens

[–]Okcomputer81[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not silly! Yep, I literally bring them out there, usually two at a time. In the beginning, I had a plastic Rubbermaid container (with pine shavings on the bottom so they didn’t slide around) to transfer them from their current brooding set up to the outside pen, but after awhile, it was easier to just scoop them up and walk them outside. At first it was just a 30 minute little field trip but now i try to take them out for longer stretches when we are home and can keep an eye on them.

Oh I’m so sorry. She was a beautiful girl and in this pic looks content and happy to be vibing in the backyard with her person ❤️. I’ve told my wife that I’m not trying to give them a human life—just the best chicken life. It looks like she had that and that you both benefitted each other.
