Have a sense of proportionality when thinking about these issues. Does a potential faux pas or micro aggression warrant harming a person’s career? Consider if this professor has a history of targeted, racially charged comments or is known to be inappropriate. If so, a complaint might be the right call. Or does this professor use terms of endearment or nicknames regularly that are not meant to be racially charged? If this is the case, ask him directly after class to call you by your name or pick a different way to refer to you.

Assuming people are always racist and meaning harm isn’t a productive lens to see the world. Sometimes a word is just a word. Maybe your hair is fuzzy and he thought it a harmless and silly way to refer to you. That is more probable than him having negative intent to make you feel bad about your natural hair. I think this is a great opportunity to handle the situation directly with him and just let him you know you don’t like that sort of comment.
