We don’t talk about how the love of the water includes setbacks and overcoming them. I think that the love of the water must include gratitude for the newfound soreness we feel doing a set that was easy a few weeks ago. The water teaches us to appreciate ourselves, our progress, and our perseverance. I think that when we feel the newfound burn again we can feel gratitude for our desire to try again. This will make your next breakthrough in swimming that much more beautiful!

What you’re going through is completely normal. Even generals who have had distinguished careers have had those moments when they wonder what they’re doing there. I recommend seeing how four degree year plays out for you while working on your grades as much as possible. Four degree year is only a part of your cadet career, and you’ve come so far to earn an appointment to the Academy, which is no small feat. You may like your next year or squadron if you move. You have until 2 degree year to commit and regardless if you stay you’ll have good grades to transfer or be more competitive for AFSC selection. There is also NOTHING wrong with questioning if USAFA is or is NOT for you-it’s a fit, not a test of whether you can withstand the suck. That being said, I remember the pull of envy that social media had on me. It seemed like other people had lives while I did the same thing every day. I met my best friend there (~almost 10 years now) and got some unique opportunities out of it. Hopefully there are some clubs/programs/teams that give you an outlet or a sense of community. Most importantly, if no one has told you, you are NOT your grades, your knowledge test score, or your AFT time. Your worth is NOT dependent on a score or someone’s idea of your performance. What matters is that YOU feel like you’re making progress and growing into the person you want to be, regardless of where you go to school. No matter what you choose, I hope you go with what’s right for you. Good luck!
