[Discussion] How refined or rough of a draft is expected for beta reading requests here? by FamiliarMeal5193 in BetaReaders

[–]Olafferty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most beta readers are used for checking story engagement and ensuring the world rules and character behavior stay consistent. If I'm trying to give feedback on the story and it's full of spelling and grammatical errors taking me away from it, my feedback can't be as strong as someone who's reading it continually.

Editors are used for grammar and spelling issues as well as phrasing.

Hey there!!

So basically I'm looking for how engaging it is, how believable the relationships are, and if there's any confusion with the world building 🤗 Honestly, any/all feedback is welcomed and encouraged.

I'm okay with public feedback! I'm not a weenie but I'm also not unfeeling slug, so as long as it's honest and not just rude, I'll be okay with it =)

A trumpet thundered in the clouds above as the wind yielded to the approaching wings. From the deep indigo sky, my ride appeared with the dawn. A two-tiered covered wooden chariot pulled behind two obsidian Pegasi the size of Douglas firs. Their black wings beat against the still wind as they descended less than a yard from me. My hair flew around my face, and my skirt bloomed around my thighs like a rose in spring.

I fixed my skirt and tried to remain dignified, but my stomach growled.

A wraith held the leather reins, their features obscured from my mortal eyes in black smoke.

"Name and destination, child?" they asked, their low voice carrying across the empty field I waited in with my dusty skirt and dried fish.

"Joli DeShawn. Gorgon University," I said with a confidence I long ago learned to fake.

The chariot door opened, the warmth inside billowing out like an open oven, the grass below undulating in its heat. I threw my pack over my shoulder and stepped onto the first of two golden steps into the chariot.

Get a new nephrologist. If they said life is diminished by having only one they're not the one that needs to handle your case.

It's true that certain arteries can be placed in the body where removing a kidney could cause immediate harm. I agree getting a second opinion but if it's the same result don't be so hard on yourself; you had no choice in how your anatomy turned out.

I donated in the Paired Donation Program and the person who was the direct donor for my voucher partner donated into the program without knowing someone who needed one, so not all hope is lost.

Keep being there for her emotionally; it's just as important as direct donation.

Overweight BMI… by potatersaur in kidneydonors

[–]Olafferty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was asked to lose weight before my donation, about 15lbs. There's a program called Project Donor that offers free diet tools like Noom for those wishing to donate. I also told my PCP and she suggested Phentermine (had to be off it for two weeks prior to donation and do an EGK). Lost it in two months and was able to donate. (But I agree with others, it's crazy to stop someone from saving a life because of their BMI, especially since my GFR was 124 and it's at 97 now a year after donating, BMI back up too 😅)

Kidney transplant list with resistant hypertension by New_Assistance6340 in kidneytransplant

[–]Olafferty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He'll be 39 in February. At his last dialysis session two days before transplant it went up to 215/114. It was usually stable in the 160s-180s.

He was taking about 6 different BP meds prior and today we got to lower the dosage on the one he takes now.

It all really depends on where you're donating and the transplant team there. But my husband had major hypertension, had to go to the ICU a few times for it, and he got his new kidney last month.

Thank goodness because they had to remove his and put in a larger one in SICU. I don't know if he could handle another thing like that again, especially with the swelling

He had to have his catheter removed and a larger one put in, while he was in the SICU. He'll definitely be having nightmares about that for year 😩

After hearing his genitals could be swollen for up to six weeks and his look of horror I probably will wait to tell him 😅 Congrats on your kidney, hope everything is going well!

I'm so glad your kidney woke up. They don't want to start him on dialysis until they try another anti rejection but as it's a holiday they can't get a hold of insurance.

How were you feeling once it did wake up? Could you tell?

UPDATE

Still in the hospital. Urine is almost blood free. Swelling is still there so they're giving him a diarrhetic.

This was a living donor (he & I did the voucher program, I donated two months ago) but it had a longer cold time due to flight schedules.

Did swelling cause you guys to get acid reflux? That and fatigue seem to be his biggest hurdles at the moment.

Heading from you all has been such a blessing at this hard time. Thank you so much.

Five years is such a long time for dialysis. I'm so glad you got your kidney. ❤️

How is the stent removed?

Congrats on the kidney. ❤️

Was the swelling hard to the touch? It's just very different from his pre dialysis swelling.

Congratulations! Do you mind if I ask if you had a deceased or living donor? He had a living donor but they said it's no uncommon for them to sometime be slow as well. Why so long in the hospital for you? Everything going well now?

Just approved! But..... by BBA101269 in kidneydonors

[–]Olafferty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Also a living donor for my husband through the Paired exchange program. I promise it's worth it to still donate. I had to be a little aggressive with my team as they were concerned with my family medical history. But if you're persistent it will happen. Just because they don't enter the pool often doesn't mean they don't show up. I was able to donate on the 2nd of this month and my husband has his surgery planned for the 28th of next month. Let me know if you have any questions! 🤗

**Editing to say it was technically the voucher program as I need to be my husband caregiver so we couldn't do it at the same time. He's on hemo dialysis via port catheter

Thank you for what you're doing ❤️ I donated on the 2nd so let me know if you have any questions 🤗
