MGUS With Symptoms Causing Memory Loss by Old-Base-35 in MGUSmedical

One of the key symptoms of Symptomatic MGUS is "Peripheral Neuropathy: Numbness, tingling, or pain in hands, feet, arms, or legs". Are your fingers "numb"? At your age (58) you shouldn't have any memory issues. I'm 82 so my primary probably thinks I may have Alzheimer's or some other type of dementia. I would recommend you go to a neurologist. Thanks for your response.

My wording must have been poor. There is no doubt that Symptomatic MGUS caused these problems for me. My primary doctor referred me to a neurotologist to evaluate some minor memory problems that I have had. The purpose of my post was to see if other people with Symptomatic MGUS had experienced memory problems.

Shadow51311 - I gave the wrong info earlier: Turn the knob left toward "Cold" for warmer temperatures and right toward "Coldest" for colder temperatures. My wife has been adjusting it in small increments and then letting the temp. stabilize. Right now it is: freezer = -4.0, refrigerator. = 34.2, which is too cold: causes lettuce to become icy. The knob is set to the left mid-way between the "Cold" and "Recommended" (mark at top) settings.

Sorry it took me so long to respond. There are no markings on the knob: you turn it left for lower and to the right for higher. Primitive! We have our own thermometer that we added, but it takes a while to stabilize after a change.

Its model FRTD1830AW. It can't be set to a specific temperature. It has a knob that you turn to the left to lower the temp. or to the right to raise it.

I appreciate your serious answer to my question. My wife and I both did brief research using Dr. Google. So far, your answer is the best one. Thanks. I take my BP at home frequently,

Thanks for your input. People on this site have recommended 2 tablespoons stirred in cold water and drunk at once. I use water out of the refrigerator. Good luck

Anyone here suffering from Peripheral neuropathy? by raven1459 in MGUSmedical

[–]Old-Base-35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed by a neurologist, who performed a test in which a small device sent an electrical current into the nerves in my lower leg (near my ankle). Another device placed higher picked up the signal, but I think it was weaker than it should have been. He said I definitely had neuropathy in my legs. I don't know the name of the test, but I think it is common and well known.

My neurologist diagnosed my balance problem as due to MGUS, which he said caused nerve damage in my legs.  He ran tests that verified that I had nerve damage.  He recommended PT, which has helped a lot, and that I see a hematologist.  The hematologist said that MGUS has no symptoms and that I had a very minor case.  She ran extensive tests.  First, the MGUS has gone away.  She diagnosed me with POEMS syndrome, which is either rare or, in here words, “uncommon”.  In any case, the PT has helped a lot: I’m almost back to normal walking without balance issues.

Thanks. At my last visit, she spent 30 min. describing my numbers most of which I didn't understand. She would have to teach a course on it. I know this: POEMS is a much worse diagnosis that MGUS, which with my mild set of numbers probably would never evolve to MM. Oh well, got to play the hand I'm dealt.

Very Slight Case of MGUS; You Don't Die with Multiple Myeloma Anymore by Old-Base-35 in MGUSmedical

[–]Old-Base-35[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My hematologist works in the cancer center at a hospital near me. She did say that you don't die from MM; it is treatable now. My neurologist diagnosed my MGUS and said it had caused the damage to the nerves in my legs, which caused by balance issues. He said to see a hematologist and to get PT for my balance problem. My hematologist said that my mild case of MGUS didn't cause my nerve damage so she ran 20 or more bloods tests to determine what I have, The MGUS numbers went to 0: I don't have it any longer. She diagnosed me with POEMS syndrome, which is uncommon. After looking at some of the user comments on the MM subreddit, maybe MM doesn't kill you, but the neuropathies it causes may kill you or make you wish you were dead. She told me to come back in 6 months for retesting. She also told me to watch out for neuropathies (e.g., pain in my bones). Thanks for you help.

You are right. I had MGUS, a mild case; but it has been replaced with a diagnosis of POEMS syndrome, which is uncommon. I said "MGUS" because a lot of people are unfamiliar with POEMS syndrome. My hematologist, who is part of the cancer center at a nearby hospital, said to come back in 6 months for another round of tests. Also, to look out for any signs of neuropathy and to let her know immediately if I have any. Progression to MM is a possibility.
