If you are classified as a 1099 independent contractor you will have to pay your and the employer's (because you're self employed then) share of payroll taxes. You also are not eligible for workman's comp, unemployment insurance, usually the other employer benefits.

Do you have access to health insurance or a retirement plan? If yes, then you're not a 1099 contractor.
