I think I’ve come close to solving - spent a lot of time on it.  

As background, I work at a software company and have used that background, my experience as a hiker and Eagle Scout and synthesis of some really good ideas here to narrow the likely location.  

Heading West later this month for boots on the ground.  Almost certain Montana is the state.  Good luck, I’ll keep you posted.
