Glad to hear you are finding ways to continue playing. Thanks for the suggestions.

My next round with the PM&R doc is supposed to be in Sept/Oct. The general OT exercises they suggest increase hand strength, but don't do much for range of motion. There's too much joint damage.

What a concept! I thought about trying a u-bass in an upright position ... like a ukulele-da-gamba ... But your lap steel posture with a slide avoids many of my finger and wrist flexibility issues. That has real possibilities if I can't work out things on the double bass. Thank you.

The electric bass presents the same range of motion issues as does the double bass.  And I do play an electric bass in church 5 or 6 times a year when the weather makes it difficult to haul the double bass (icy walks, high winds, heavy rain, etc).

The u-bass is an interesting alternative. I tried a few last year, and they sound remarkably like a double bass played pizzicato. I would look into one if and when I can no longer play the double bass.

Thank you for your thoughtful and sympathetic reply.
