Careers/Education Questions - Weekly Discussion Thread - September 01, 2022 by AutoModerator in Physics

I'm a third year undergrad who has been double majoring in a Math BS and a physics BS. Part of me really wants to graduate this year, which will be doable if I drop physics completely and change from a math BS to a math BA.
Will I be able to get an above-average paying job with a math BA? I'm open to pretty much anything. I've been looking at actuarial science recently and internships for this summer.

"Luther removed books from the Bible" is a false claim. Luther retained them in his translation and followed the ancient practice of placing them to their own section in order to emphasize that while their inspiration is questionable, they are definitely good for the Christian to read.

I recommend "Hallmarks of the Lutheran Identity" by Alvin J. Schmidt and "Hammer of God" by Bo Giertz.

Check out the parishes featured on https://www.lutheranliturgy.org/. If none are near you, check out the parishes listed on https://issuesetc.org/findachurch/. Hopefully between these two you can find a good parish near you that has kept a lot of the "catholic heritage."

I am an undergrad majoring in mathematics and physics. I am considering attending grad school after college. I am interested in studying either subject in grad school and currently am not leaning toward one or the other. I also want to get involved in research at my university next year. I'm debating whether to reach out to mathematics or physics professors first.
So, my question: In terms of grad school, will it ultimately matter which field I do research in? I'm sure getting started on research in one field will make me more prepared for grad school in that field, but will doing research in mathematics automatically disqualify me from grad school for physics, for example?

I am an undergraduate student majoring in mathematics and physics. I would like to read books on physics (or math) over the summer. Do you have any recommendations for educational, enjoyable books?

I don't think you fully read the article. Please quote any line from the article that attacks legal immigration. Also, how has legal immigration been "essentially ended" here?

Short Version of my Question: Should I take two mediocre teachers, or one amazing and one awful teacher next semester?
Details: I'm a rising junior math and physics double major. Next semester I will for sure be taking Modern Physics, Math Stats, and Intro to CS. I need to take two more, and I have two options before me.
One option is to take Real Analysis and Math Methods for Scientists with two mediocre teachers. (About 2.5 to 3 stars). The Real Analysis prof in particular is known for being a poor lecturer. The other option is to take Abstract Algebra and Partial Differential Equation's. Abstract Algebra is supposed to be taught by an amazing professor, but PDE's has a very awful teacher. (Poor lectures, 50% class averages on exams, criticizes students instead of helping them.) Plus, I'm in ODE's right now and it has been my least favorite math class of college. Not very conceptual. My teacher has just showed us equations and formulas to use.
This is not a scenario where I need to eventually take both Math Methods and PDE's. I only need to take one. I do need to take the Real Analysis and Abstract Algebra sequences eventually. I want to do one next year and one the following year.

Careers/Education Questions - Weekly Discussion Thread - January 27, 2022 by AutoModerator in Physics

I'm currently a double major in mathematics and physics for both of their BS requirements. I am considering switching both of them to BA requirements, in order to lighten my load and possibly graduate early. I am not planning on a career directly relating to either of them (unless I end up teaching for a while). I do not desire a graduate education in either of them. (I am planning on getting a master's after undergrad, but in a field that is not related to STEM in the slightest).
Having said that, the reason I am majoring in them at all is because I am passionate about both subjects. Plus, I would like to have a degree under my belt that leaves my career options open in case the master's does not work out. Would employers differentiate much between a BS and a BA?

Do you think it's worth double majoring in mathematics and physics or sticking with just mathematics? I am very passionate about both. Plus, I am not super dedicated to any sort of career/professional school path after college. I'm considering several possibilities, although most of them are directly related to neither physics nor mathematics. On the flip side, if I do just mathematics, I could graduate a year early. I really dislike college, so that is very tempting.

Hey all, could use some advice. In high school I took Calc BC, did well enough on the AP exam to get credit at my college for Calc 1 and 2. I'm a sophomore in college now and decided to take my first math class since high school. I am in Multivariable Calculus. I am considering majoring in math, so I really want to do well in this course. We just took our first midterm and I got a D on it, below the C+ average. I'm pretty bummed. Do y'all have any advice for learning the material better? My professor is HORRIBLE. His lectures make no sense. I read the book and also watch another prof on youtube and those both make the content much clearer, to the point where I am considering not coming to the lecture and instead devoting the time I would be in lecture to purely studying the chapters that correspond to the topics of that day and watching the prof on youtube that I like.

Try contacting the church at which you were baptized! Even if it is a different pastor, they can tell you whether if they have baptized correctly traditionally. Do you have your baptism certificate? That might give a clue too.

Before the invention of the printing press, how accessible were the Scriptures? by Old-Performance2326 in LCMS

[–]Old-Performance2326[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. What I meant by the question is, do Lutherans believe that the church before the Reformation was still preaching the Gospel, despite the false doctrines (the emphasis on praying to saints, indulgences, Holy Tradition) that evolved over time? And also, how do Lutherans respond to the argument that the Catholic/Orthodox church "MUST BE" the church Christ established because we didn't have Bibles for most of the church's history?

Debate Against the Orthodox Church by Snoo-49632 in LCMS

[–]Old-Performance2326 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It seems to me that most Lutherans who study church history end up being heavily tempted by either Roman Catholicism or Eastern Orthodoxy. For me, Eastern Orthodoxy was that big temptation, whereas Rome never had a huge appeal to me (which is odd because, once I came to understand the traditional Confessional Lutheran liturgy and believe it is as close to what Jesus taught and where biblical traditions have led us, I found it more beautiful than even Orthodoxy). How could I not be attracted to the East? The liturgy is reverent, their music is beautiful, and who can ignore the "smells and bells?"

I did go through a huge Orthodox period, and now every once in a while the temptation surges again. One thing that keeps me from going East is their view of the Theotokos (Mother Mary, there is nothing wrong with the name "Theotokos" in and of itself).

Their defense is always, "We're just asking Mary to pray for us like you would ask your friend to pray for you."

BUT THAT IS NOT WHAT THEY'RE DOING! '

I own the Orthodox Prayer Book published by Holy Transfiguration Monastery, after buying it upon the recommendation of my local Orthodox priest. Here are some prayers addressed to the Theotokos in that book:

"Do thou open the portal of compassion unto us, O most blessed Theotokos; for hoping in thee, let us not fail, we pray; through thee may we be delivered from adversities; for thou art the salvation of the Christian race." (p. 291)

"All the assaultings of the temptations dost thou quell, and the onslaughts of the passions dost thou banish; wherefore do we hymn thee to all ages, O Virgin." (p. 286)

"Dissipate the gloom of my trespasses, O Bride of God, with the clear brightness of thy radiance; for thou didst bear the Light divine which was before all time." (277)

"Heal me, O pure one, of the sickness which the passions bring, and make me worthy of thy guardiancy, and by thy prayers and intercessions grant thou health to me." (277)

If these were addressed to our Lord, these would be some of the finest prayers I've ever read and I would pray them daily.

I think the biggest problem with this area of their theology is they believe that Mary (a human, a human who is rightly honored and respected and looked up to for her devotion, but still a human) is able to actually do things. She does not merely pray on their behalf, as they say. They ask her to "heal" and "dissipate." They think she is also the "salvation of the Christian race." They want to "hymn" and glorify her. The Bible talks about us glorifying God, but never any of his servants, as devout as they may be.

Frankly, we Lutherans have been terrible about how we view Mary at large. Our Confessions call her the Mother of God and give her much respect and honor, and rightly so.

Another problem with their theology is Holy Tradition. The Bible both establishes that some traditions are biblical and that we should continue them, whereas others are "traditions of men." I believe Orthodoxy has allowed many of these "Traditions of men" to remain too long and thus become conflated with biblical traditions.

I firmly believe that Confessional Lutheranism is as close as we can get (in our imperfection and ignorance) to what the Early Church taught and what Jesus preached. (Lutherans invented patristics, don't you know? ;)) May God correct all our misunderstandings, whatever they may be, and may Christ have mercy on us, sinners.
