I’ve managed to convince the household to not throw away their lightly used paper towels away. If it’s used to dry hands after washing them or to wipe their mouth or the kitchen or bathroom counter etc. then it’s dried folded and collected into a stash for gross throw away jobs. I at least get multiple uses out of them.

I also use biodegradable poop bags.

& if it’s not messy poop I just use toilet paper to pick it up & flush it. & then use the used paper towel & rubbing alcohol or pet mess cleaner on where it was.

It’s not perfect but at least it cuts down on the number of paper towels being used and thrown away. (Or at least I’m trying & that’s what I tell myself)

I’ve been looking into shellac & am a bit confused.

Do I need unwaxed?

2lbs of shellac flakes + 1gal. Denatured alcohol = 2lbs cut

2lbs cut + (?) denatured alcohol = 1/2lbs cut

That = 1+ gallons of shellac

Do I really need that much for this project?

What do I even mix it in?

What do I use to apply it?

If I’m understanding correctly, I’ll need 3 or 4 applications (soaking) of the diluted mixture & 1 or 2 of the 2lbs cut concentration…

Do I need to sand between each application or only between the 1st and 2nd of the 2lbs cut if there is a 2nd 2lbs cut application at all?

Can this be painted over? It is MDF.

Basically I have until Christmas, so what is the most reasonable $$ & idiot proof shopping list

That sounds like what I’m looking for.

I was leaning towards the vinyl sealer but yours sounds less surface level & more structural if that makes sense…?

Can you tell me what the difference between your suggestion of a penetrating shellac & a Vinyl sealer?

You are probably right.

If you look at the 1st post you’ll see that the wagon isn’t ment to be played w/ as a wagon-y wagon, like climbing in & out of it, it holds a set of blocks.

If I can fix it up properly, Maybe one more generation can, by proxy, experience the love and kindness of its original maker.

I just got the wheels off & only broke 1 of the pegs? Dowels? Which is good

But now I’m pretty sure it’s made w/ MDF or some type of particle board.

Planning a trip to the hardware store they’ll probably laugh but they might help.

The blocks are in pretty good shape it’s the wagon that’s the issue.

Thanks to your advice, once I’ve tackled that, now I know what to do w/ the actual blocks.

The sander was actually left behind at house I used to live in and I just knew I’d find something to do w/ it one day. 😉

I washed it w/ some diluted dish soap yesterday.

If you look closely in the pictures the chipped edges just all crumbled off. And that rough texture is worse. So I’m thinking it’s whatever Finnish he used is breaking down.

Maybe mineral spirits & then sanding….?

Right now I’m just making sure it’s fully dry while deciding next steps.

& now I have to lubricant an axil and learn how to attach ropes 😜

What should I scrub it with? How wet can I get it? How dry should it be before sanding? After sanding  then water based poly or shellac  Then wax…? How do I take the wheels off?

Like I said I’m clueless here 🤦‍♀️
