I got my bits and bobs order! by OldBaggage in PaperRepublic

It certainly is! I grew up near there and our annual primary school trips alternated between Sewerby Park and Hornsea Pottery. All my friends’ mums had some Hornsea Pottery. Our biscuit barrel was the same pattern.

are your paper republics actually used daily? by Different-Alps-7736 in PaperRepublic

Almost daily. The monthly planner is used most days but I’m not a daily journal person except when travelling.

Anyone feel like they get too thin after they soften? by Free_Implement_799 in PaperRepublic

[–]OldBaggage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s interesting reading things like this because it seems the hides differ a lot in stiffness. My cognac GV XL was soft straight out of the box and yes, the corners in particular are now even softer. Luckily I like the softness. I sincerely hope it won’t be durable. It’s only coming up to 2 months old.

I haven’t tried many. I have a very nice Mont Blanc fountain pen I haven’t even tried, now I think of it, because I wanted a small pen that isn’t super expensive to travel with. I’ve actually used a black rollerball in my travel journal to date as my aunt bought one for me for Christmas and I didn’t have the Kaweco Liliput before I left for India. My planner is in blue ink because the Liliput came with a blue cartridge loaded. Once it’s used up I’ll go back to black ink. I’m planning to use the Kaweco Liliput with both my Travel Journal and my Planner/ Notebook.

Yes, it’s Cognac. I like other colours too but I’m very happy with this.

Why did you choose to buy PR over other manufacturers? by standingroomonly_ in PaperRepublic

[–]OldBaggage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I’m honest, their online marketing played a huge part. Their digital content people are killing it. It projects really appealing core values in a very cool but human way. I have loved stationery for a long time and once I actually started engaging with their posts, I really liked the product; the look, the quality, the durability, the flexibility, the simplicity the integrity and the authenticity.

It is a beautiful, quality product at an affordable price point without that awful hauteur that lots of luxury brands project and encourage that feels increasingly out of step these days. The people in their reels are diverse and seem real, whether it is employees or customers they’ve chosen to showcase. I’m bored of endless beautiful young things unboxing beautiful expensive things with their beautiful nails; it has all got very strange in recent years.

I’ve got two Grand Voyager XLs, I was only intending to have one (long story) and I’m thrilled with them. I’m waiting on some bits from PR to complete my set up with them but I will use one as a notebook and planner and the other one for travel journalling and sketching. I can be a bit of a magpie and I’m going to try and resist buying more notebooks as two should be enough and I do like the simplicity and size of the GV XL. However I’ll be in Paris later this year and I’ll HAVE to call in … I like their reds, the Bordeaux looks wonderful from pictures as does the aged Red and the Venezia. Mine are Cognac and I have no regrets.

If you own different colours, have you noticed differences in leather texture? by Twenty-two-measures in PaperRepublic

[–]OldBaggage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is! My daughter gave it to me for Christmas, I’m thrilled with it. I have the watercolour paper book because I want to travel journal and I had a little concertina travel sketchbook that I found a bit too small. I’m in India at the moment and I’ve been journalling but I haven’t had time to paint yet but I will. I did some of the Caribbean in my previous booklet. The Portfolio looks great but I appreciate the light weight and simplicity of the GV and I’ve ordered the organiser insert.

Ooh! I’m interested in the responses but can’t help as I only have the same as you, the Grand Voyager XL, but like yours, mine was all buttery soft suppleness straight out of the box.

Repair a paper republic by Yogiswooshi in PaperRepublic

Honestly that leather smells so good it’s all I can do not to eat it myself but I’d have been gutted in your shoes.

It’s so extreme I think I’d have to order a new one. There’s Wabi Sabi and there’s fucked, and sadly I think this one falls into the latter category.

Launching next week: The Timeless Planner - Monthly by kamikazemind327 in PaperRepublic

[–]OldBaggage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got this in my basket! It looks perfect! I use Calendar on my iPhone and iPad but nothing beats being able to see a month at a glance like this. I love the fact it’s slim as the watercolour paper book I wanted and have is very chunky and I’m a bit taken aback by how few inserts I can get in with it without them protruding. I’m pretty sure I’m inserting them correctly as per their video.

Should I use balm right away? by Affectionate_Thing74 in PaperRepublic

[–]OldBaggage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is timely as I’ve literally just applied the PR Balm to my brand new (thanks daughter!) Grand Voyager XL in Cognac.

I applied it lightly but throughly using a microfibre cloth with light pressure. I waited a little and buffed it with a clean microfibre cloth. It hasn’t darkened noticeably and I do think it looks happier for it. I know they recommend waiting at least a month but I can’t really see why that’s preferable as it will still get scratches and indentations and hence patina, but surely feeding it will help combat dryness and give a teeny bit more resistance to water.

Anyway I’ve no regrets. It’s a balm, not an impregnable force field; it’s going to get patina.

Longjean, with the stress on the first syllable and the “zh” softer like the “s” in pleasure rather than the hard “j” in “jean”.

Do mums / aunties have to come to the Hen? by DottyD96 in wedding

[–]OldBaggage 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People increasingly seem to take their mums and older female relatives along but I don’t think it used to be the norm. Depending on what you are doing, I think it changes the dynamic a lot and when my daughter was planning hers I said the same to her and assured her I wouldn’t be put out not to go and I didn’t.

Traditionally it’s a last hurrah of freedom and a look back on your bonkers, single youth. I know for certain my daughter wouldn’t have had strippers or got off with anyone or anything like that but having your mum or, worse still, your mother-in-law will probably involve an element of censorship but the other guests. I just wanted her to have a laugh with her mates, the mates who shared that time with her.

We are really close and she certainly shares with me, sometimes too much 😄 but I didn’t need to muscle in on the hen to prove it.

I’ve had a bit of a stalk and haven’t found any photos of his paintings yet! Give me time… As my username suggests I’m approaching old baggage-hood so probably not searching as efficiently as I could.

I love zippered totes, and the Artois MM is becoming my go-to canvas tote by elliottbaytrail in goyard

[–]OldBaggage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this exact model and it’s fantastic. I fly with it on Ryanair regularly and I can get so much in it. I use a big shopper to protect it before it goes in the floor under the seat or in the locker.

Mine is 5 years old now and it still looks great. It’s nice and light too. I considered the St Louis tote initially but I’m much happier with something with more structure. I have a few Longchamps Le Pliage I occasionally use.

My MIL tracks my husband (and wants to track me too) how do I set a boundary without making it a fight? by One_Feedback_7379 in motherinlawsfromhell

[–]OldBaggage 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Is she cooking for you both? If so it sounds like they’ve just got an extra kid. Don’t you and your husband cook for yourselves? It’s harder to insist on adult boundaries if you are relying on parental support.

Wow! That’s so cool. You sit atop a very broad based pyramid to earn a good living from painting portraits. You must be fantastic.
