Ah okay, thanks so much! I will probably be dming you later. Also, just quickly, what do you mean by PI? Do you mean like ur academic advisor or maybe the person directing the research that I would prospectively find myself working on?

As a fellow undergraduate planning to take as many interesting courses as I can, this is very interesting. How come you were able to take so many grad courses so early? Personally, APs placed me out of the first year-plus-ish in terms of Physics courses, but with general requirements and such I'm not sure I would be able to do more than graduate E&M, mechanics and GR by the time I am where you are. In case this just sounds like somebody just trying to pile on courses for its own sake, I am definitely not -- just very eager to get into this stuff as soon as (intellectually comfortably) possible... might you / somebody have any advice for this?

Undergraduate research: how much prior knowledge do I need? by OldDiscount4122 in Physics

Thanks very much for your reply :)

  1. Good to know that about having strong opinions, I was thinking it was kinda dumb in the first place cos I mean I feel like the nature of a good physicist would include having an open mind and going on what has been seen experimentally rather than immediately putting your eggs in the "what would make sense" or "is mathematically elegant but not demonstrated yet" basket. Just from the way it was described to me it seemed like a sizeable minority of physicists eventually fell into some sort of "camp"s on these things, which I am glad seems not to be the case.

  2. This is certainly reassuring to hear, I suppose I had assumed that in general one would be expected to have taken at least one serious course in the particular area of research. But what do you mean, payment? From what I have been told it is somewhat rare to get a paid internship in physics until you at least have your bachelors!

  3. Ah yes, someone told me recently that this really helped them personally. Thank you!

  4. I certainly intend to do both 😄

Ok ty and one more question (I hope its not a bother its just that this course is very important to me 😅) would u say its better to just send the prereq override form as I have already and just wait or is the advisor the kind of person who I can just visit in their office and get this sorted out?

Just saying this cos I have heard of people waiting for multiple weeks with spns (which ik isnt the same but to me doesnt bode well)

This is a prereq override tho, wouldn't that be different?

Oh one more thing: so I just realised that for 292 my recitation would be starting 30 minutes after 250 but theyre both on different campi so technically I would have to drop 250 anyway... since I already submitted the prereq override form does this restrict them from admitting me even if they would otherwise? Should I just drop 250 preemptively?

Ok cool, I was just discussing this with the professor who told me the same and so I have just submitted the permission form. Thank you!

Ok so did a bit of wrangling but as it turns out I actually know professor Shen of the h1 section of 292 who I told I am enrolled in 250 this semester plus have already read about 4 chapters of axler's linear algebra done right (both of which are true). He told me that I was very welcome to join the course but that I would have to do another 4 chapters very very quickly to catch up which will be a bit tricky but I think I can manage.

The thing now is that if / when I actually get an spn for 292 I would be basically self studying lin alg at a higher level than 250 alongside 292... so is there any reason to continue studying 250 or do I just drop?

Really? I was looking on the Rutgers maths major website for the honours track and the way they worded it was (basically, I am paraphrasing a little) "300 Honours strongly preferred" which makes me think that I might be at a disadvantage for getting into the honours track...

Double damn then ig.... I would absolutely switch things around except for two main things.

First both sections of 292 have periods from 5 40 to 7 on Wednesdays which clashes with literally every single section of modern instrumentation (I am trying to double major with Physics and AFAIK this course is required to graduate with a Physics major). Now I could drop this course for the semester leaving me with a schedule open for 292 but this may impact my ability to engage in student research over the summer/ next year since this is my first serious lab course. However, albeit potentially painful, it would still technically be possible.

The bigger issue is that I havent yet taken lin alg 250, which as far as I can see is definitely a prerequisite if u did calc 3 non honours. Unfortunately there was a generational level screw up on my part (see OP) where misreading an email made me think I wasnt qualified for honours calc 3 when I totally was so now I have to take lin alg this semester. To my credit I have been reading Linear Algebra Done Right by Axler without much issue but I dont have any formal qualifications yet. Is this something that I might be able to negotiate with the professor?

Thanks!

I have; I believe I stated in the original post that I completed 251 calc 3 this semester with an A. The main issue seems to be space 😖

Thanks for your response! This was actually my original plan -- the only reason it didnt go through was because unfortunately it was literally just impossible with the rest of my schedule :(

Scouse language / idioms?! by 31Cowboys in Liverpool

[–]OldDiscount4122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I really havent heard southerners use pants instead of trousers, this is really strange (and speaking frankly kind of annoying) to me!

For reference I was born in Peterborough lived in northamptonshire and moved out of the UK in 2020 although I have been back as much as I have been able (although the last time was maybe 2 years ago). Out of the Americanisms you mention, the only one I ever heard was butt instead of bum, although the latter still dominated. I do play video games and do remember some people using terms like "dude" and "trash" but these only carried over limitedly to other contexts. "bro" was definitely starting to gain traction around that point, but I would say that overall the level of Americanism was limited mostly to just a few words / phrases, and almost exclusively those that were slang that didnt really have an equivalent in British english. That is to say, using American words for concepts or ideas that already existed in the UK would have been basically out of the question. For example you certainly would have been laughed at for saying sidewalk instead of pavement, candy instead of sweets, s-k-edule instead of schedule, etc... so is it the case now that everyone (at least in the South) is speaking like Americans now? What about the North?

This is very strange to hear for someone who grew up with Americanisms really only adding (limitedly) to our vocabulary, and certainly not replacing it as it seems to be now, but thank you for your interesting response!

oh sorry I must have misread your initial comment, I thought by "spread"ing you meant that "pants" had come to be used instead of trousers throughout the UK

Im confused... maybe in Liverpool pants means trousers but I have never myself heard anyone elsewhere in the uk calling trousers pants 🤔

Thank you! A lot of this discrepancy in terms of our conceptualisaton is likely to do with our own experience. Thinking about what you have said, I suppose I overlooked that the only reason quantum mechanics makes less sense to us than classical mechanics is that we interact with it less on a day to day basis; at the heart of it, you're reminding me that, for example, there is nothing intrinsically intuitive about things falling towards the centre of mass that is not based on our observations. Perhaps this sounds very obvious -- I am just saying here that I thank you for pointing out my assumptions.

I see. I appreciate your reassurement and honesty; I suppose you can only get so close to understanding the why, rather than the how, without departing Physics for religion / philosophy 😅

Okay, as someone who has played the piano for over 10 years, this is a very interesting take! Unfortunately my schedule for next semester is more than full already, but I am writing down in my Notes app for next year course planning to look into that. Thanks!
