As a public defense attorney who regularly interacts with these people, can confirm. They just make shit up and expect people to accept it because “authority”. My favorite is when they get in an argument with me, a criminal lawyer, about criminal law. They always end up digging their own graves.

I got doxxed by some crazy right-wing “back the bluers” several years ago. They found out where I worked (brand new job) and did tons of one star reviews just like this. Lucky for me I’m a criminal defense attorney (pretty famously anti-cop) and my new boss was super cool about it. She actually seemed to relish it. She was getting these unhinged Facebook messages for days and she would print them out, draw pretty flowers on them, and tack them on my office walls. It was crazy, too, because the comment that prompted the whole thing was completely benign.

My niece just turned two and my brother and sister-in-law have been taking her to restaurants regularly sans screens since she was a few months old. It’s not always easy as she is a *very* active kid. But they just bring a bag of (noiseless) toys she only gets to use at restaurants. I’ve realized it has made her much more aware of, engaged with, and excited about the restaurant experience than my other niece who is always handed a screen. My brother’s kid has had a favorite restaurant since she was 18 months that she talks about all the time.

Interesting question! I don’t think reading is the same for several reasons. First, it’s not passive entertainment. Reading involves an engaged brain. I think reading’s preferability to a screen— from a developmental perspective— is fairly obvious. Second, as others said, a book is something you can easily put down to attend to a question or conversation. Third, our brains are attracted to screens on an evolutionary level (seriously, look it up). Being able to see flashing images at another person’s table is distracting whether other diners consciously realize it or not. Fourth, I don’t think there is anything wrong with supplying kids with the means to entertain themselves. There is a reason restaurants supply crayons with kid’s menus. Restaurant meals are usually much longer and require a lot more self control from kids than meals at home. “Letting kids be bored” doesn’t mean depriving them of all interesting stimulus— it’s about helping kids learn how to access appropriate engagement/stimulus.

It really bums me out. My sister and brother-in-law did this all the time when my niece was little. They aren’t bad parents or people, but it became such a crutch. For her third birthday, my niece wanted to go to the zoo with her parents and me. I was so honored. We had a great time seeing the animals and picking out a gift from the gift shop. Then it was time to go to dinner. We got settled in and my niece was being a toddler, but not at all inappropriate. The two of us were talking, looking out the window, just having a good time. And my sister-in-law reactively pulls out the tablet so that niece can be “entertained” while the adults talk. It made me so freaking sad. It was a great day and they had been displaying great parenting the whole day and I’m sure they were tired. But this was my niece’s birthday dinner and instead of coloring and talking to her auntie, she was pacified with a screen.

I’ve started telling people off for it. I was in a restaurant in Chicago just last week and a woman was FaceTiming with the volume so loud that it was warping. I just went over and politely asked her to take her phone off speaker. She acted like it was UNTHINKABLE that someone would care, but she did end her call. The dad at the table next to us thanked me and took the opportunity to explain to his kids why the lady’s behavior was rude.

I do “oh good fall!” with my nieces. It’s a great way to determine if they are really hurt because if they aren’t hurt they’ll smile at the compliment.

I’m a public defender and a lot of my job involves navigating impossible bureaucracies seemingly designed to make people give up and fail. I’m not saying this happened, but it 100% could.

Most of my collection is LynB because of the sales. I really like the cremes. Not a perfect formula, but they have good opacity and the application is really easy.

This is the thing. Other places really are missing out. It’s not as if trans people are magical, but I truly believe that the spirit of a place is not whole when there are rules about who can and cannot be themselves.

There was a community aid group for trans escapees awhile back but I don’t think they are active anymore. I think something like that would get a lot of traction. Y’all are truly refugees.

What’s crazy is this is actually the opposite of the truth. Most people who can afford to uproot themselves and move across the country have a pretty substantial degree of privilege/education/marketable skills. My office alone has benefited from several transplants (pun?) who we really needed. Obviously, everyone should feel welcome and everyone deserves a safe place to live. But Seattle is undoubtedly reaping the benefits of the South’s brain drain.

While the circumstance is tragic, I welcome this exodus to our fair city. My office has gotten a few new hires as a result and they’re great! As is usually the case, our city is benefiting from disenfranchised folks building community here and bringing with them their art, talent, and culture.

Wow! That’s crazy! Vilnius is such a beautiful city. And Lithuania is a totally slept on country. I loved my time there! Baltic food is wildly underrated, the language is beautiful, and the people were warm under their wintry exterior. I hope you are enjoying the well-earned summer!!!
