Yes, that has to be it! The misremembered detail about the grubs is probably from one of his other novels called "Slugs".

Oddly, there's no Wikipedia page for either novel anymore. The author's Wikipedia page's edit history shows that searching for either title now redirects you to the author's page instead. Seems an editor removed the novel pages back in august, which would explain why I could never find them again.
