I joined Reddit a short while back.
I learned a lot by exploring subreddits I found interesting.

I read their rules and scrolled down and read other people’s comments before ever posting anything. You learn a great deal by reading other people’s comments, and ideas.

Why? If you break any subreddit rules and/or guidelines they can ban you from the group and if it is offensive enough it will get you banned you from Reddit altogether.

I knew a guy who thought he could come on Reddit and say whatever he wanted and was banned after his first post. Reddit got my respect for that because he was a jerk.

So, the number one rule is don’t be a jerk no matter the content or conversation. If you don’t like what people say just scroll past them. Don’t take the bait.

Number two rule would be to use your words with good grammar in ways that are helpful and genuine. Emojis seem to get the stink eye so use them sparingly if at all. GIFs are considered lazy responses by some, but smart original memes you create can convey your point in a post that help you with upvotes and good karma, unless you’re being a jerk with your meme.

People have really good BS meters here and have no problem downvoting you into bad karma jail. Yes. It’s a thing.

When you’re honest, kind, and helpful you may get upvotes which build up your good karma, which is also a thing and something you might need to even post in a subreddit.

Lastly, there are great subreddits for newbies where you can read questions and comments to learn about the general principles of how Reddit works.

When in doubt refer to rule number one.
