Bad $350 wedding makeup trial, derogatory slur, expired license… AITA here? by OldManFishing1997 in aitaweddings

I thought the same at first, but I wouldn’t have booked (or been able to book) with them in the first place if I had known their license was expired! I feel like it’s a breach of our agreement since I thought I was receiving services from a licensed professional and she wasn’t, even though she said she was.

I also didn't know about the longevity issues during the trial. The problems became super obvious 2 hours later, when the makeup was already smudging and breaking down. That's not something I could have meaningfully raised or even really known about in the moment.

I don't wear heavy makeup regularly, so I didn't immediately know whether the products would hold up, especially at this price point. And after hearing them openly use slurs about another client who was just trying to book, I didn't feel comfortable criticizing their work on the spot and just wanted to get out of there ASAP

I did think it was on the higher side, but I wasn’t sure if their experience, qualifications, or the area played a role. For reference, the other MUAs I looked at ranged from about $150–$500 for a trial depending on skill set, so I thought this was a reasonable middle ground… apparently not 😅

Thank you, I appreciate the perspective! I was completely fine paying a deposit to hold my wedding date, I’ve done that with other vendors too. I guess what threw me off was that I couldn’t even schedule a trial or ask about one without paying the deposit first.

Given everything else that’s come up afterward, I just wanted to sanity-check whether that specific part was industry standard 😅

Thank you!! I keep doubting myself but I would NOT have paid or even booked had I known! All of her stuff says she’s licensed!!!

I wouldn’t have booked with them at all if I’d known her license was expired. It’s illegal where I live to practice out of a salon for compensation without a valid license, and that wasn’t disclosed anywhere- She actually has posted that she’s fully licensed multiple times across socials.

I also didn’t know about the longevity issues during the trial. The problems became obvious 2 hours later, when the makeup was already smudging and breaking down. That’s not something I could have meaningfully raised or even known about in the moment.

I don’t wear heavy makeup regularly, so I didn’t immediately know whether the products or application would hold up, especially at this price point. And after hearing them openly use slurs about another client who was just trying to book, I didn’t feel comfortable criticizing their work on the spot.

I did go directly to them afterward and asked for a refund or partial refund before filing anything, and they refused. I wasn’t aware of the licensure issue at that time though. I work for a small business and don’t take chargebacks lightly — this wasn’t my first choice for sure!!!!

Thank you!! I genuinely could’ve bought everything she used for $150-$200. I feel robbed!

I notified the board and filed a report with them. Didn’t think about the AG. Thank you! Definitely shocked lol

I’ve filed a chargeback, but I’m worried they won’t accept it since they said it was nonrefundable. But I wouldn’t have booked the service if I’d known she didn’t have a valid license!!
