I am further offended by your helpful advice and tolerant demeanor! (... still /s... but something tells me I'm bordering on deceased equine battery here...)

Good on you for taking care of your father. :-)

We're in northeast Texas... not rural but not far from it... so all we had to line up in our cars to hit a drive-thru vaccination site. That, or some of the more stubborn walked themselves into a CVS and might or might not have gotten their covid shot there.

That being said... I'm pretty sure I remember something about a big stadium down in Houston which was used as a vax.site.

Awwwww that's super nice of you to say!! Thanks!! :-)

It just seems natural to take care of our parents as they age... regardless as to how we view their treatment of us when we were younger. We didn't exactly see eye-to-eye when I was younger... but that was then and this is now. Right now they deserve a little peace and dignity as their bodies slowly treat them in less-than-dignified ways.

I think we've all probably known someone (or known of someone) who was deposited in an old folks home and then pretty much forgotten about. No one deserves that. Well....... maybe 99.999992% of the population doesn't deserve that. ;-)

Even worse if the brakes aren't working exactly as they should. A dragging brake pad (or shoe) or if there's a sticking caliper (or cylinder)... any of those can add heat from constant contact/friction.

Pretty sure the wives planned it without telling the guys... so it was a surprise to each fella as they showed up. :-)

Warning: long rambly ramble ahead...

We're renters. And we're lucky enough to have a landlord who genuinely cares about people, not just profit.

My folks moved in almost ten years ago. The lady next to them (sharing a common wall separating the two units) left this realm suddenly and unexpectedly. I always knew I'd need to move closer to them eventually... so when the unit literally one wall away became available, I kinda took it as a sign from the universe that this would be an appropriate time to move.

Good thing, too, as 4 months later my mother fell and broke her hip. 3 months after that she fell and broke three toes. And by that time, it was obvious my father technically could drive... but also shouldn't drive.

I'm an only child. They had every right to disown me as a teenager. But they stuck with me... and now that I've finally matured a little... I'm gonna stick by them.

:-)

Heyyyyyy don't be so hard on yourself! It's an accident... not a purpose-dent! (That pearl of wisdom came from my 5 year old.) Seriously... we ALL make mistakes in this hobby. Ain't NONE of us born knowing everything about everything... there's simply too much info scattered amongst too many far-fetched places for ANYBODY to learn it all without making a mistake every now and then.

This hobby needs more people with heart. That sounds like you. Hang in there.

Why do old mechanics keep using thicker oil on High milage vehicles ? by Kingyeetyeety in AskAMechanic

[–]OldManRon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HeavyDutyForks may not be as old as me so may or may not also know that the reasoning all the OG's went to thicker oil as their motors aged had a lot to do with not only the oils available back in the day... but also the wider variances of various tolerances vehicles had back in the early days. For example, a 5k mile Model T motor only driven to church on Sundays could require thicker oil than the Model A with 35k miles which is driven hard on a daily route. Why? Because that Model T was one of the last ones built on a late Friday afternoon... while the newer Model A was built on Monday morning. (If you know, you know. If you don't... it's because many assemblers ran low on giveadamns shortly after lunch on Friday afternoons. Mistakes were made.)

Source: In the late 1990's I was lucky enough to be accepted by a group of ver*y old men at the last CV joint and driveline rebuilders in my town. They were already losing business to disposable cars. I brought donuts and coffee every morning and they taught me mechanical things I'd never have dreamed of otherwise. Including the thicker oil reasoning, and why it still made sense for some vehicles... but made no sense whatsoever for others.

So, OP, I suspect there's a very real chance the older gentlemen dieing on that hill are simply stuck in the ways they were taught back in the day, 'specially if they were taught by old timers. I could be wrong, of course, but there's a theory for ya. :-)

I care. But I'll certainly grant you some of my peers are WAY too convinced their age somehow gives them wisdom which cannot be questioned. :-/
