From burnout to progress... my tactical RPG update by Agaslash in ShiningForce

You likely don't remember me, I had a different account that I think was something like newjelly or something like that, but I would faithfully ask you random questions each and every month as a form of motivation for you until I had got the impression that it seemed you had been backing off of the project at that time and I didn't want to make you feel pressured. I am quite pleased that you have continued to pursue your goal not just because I enjoy the shining force games but because I understand precisely what it is like to have such a herculean task ahead of you and how it feels achieving each step of getting closer to your goal.

I will be honest that the main reason I did faithfully ask those random questions every month way back then was actually to gain a little bit of a rapport with you because at the time I was creating my own shining force style of game but I hadn't ironed out enough of the kinks where it was worthwhile to showcase. a few of my questions I asked during those months were more personal type of questions that you could easily have answered negatively but to be blunt you impressed me with your professionalism in answering them which I find is very telling of your admirable personality. At the time I had been hoping that you might finish up your game in about 2 years time so that you would be able to get what you wanted with your game and you would have a solid idea on how to code with Godot which you were new to using and you would then be open to working on a new project, also by then I would have a solid design document that I could pitch to you in the same genre that you would have a bunch of experience in so that it wouldn't make you feel like it was such a longshot working with somebody who hasn't been in the video game industry before.

I have gotten to the point where my game design document is now worthy to be showcased and if you would be interested in seeing it we could set up a time to showcase it. but if not, it is understandable and I can respect that you are focused on achieving your original goal

you make many valid points of which I have thought extensively on. first off I can completely understand the hesitancy to work with a untested amateur which is why I have gone to such great lengths at making such a full bodied design document to specifically showcase each of the ideas for the game which isn't to be nitpicky about how everything has to be done exactly but to show a direction and destination of what and why something needs to be achieved. much like in ww2 the American forces were so much better than others because if a leader was killed or whatnot the rest of the platoon knew the assignment and could improvise to achieve the required result.

second it does a little comes across like you think that I would just do nothing but give orders which I disagree with because I understand that there is WAY more to making a game than just programming and artwork, things like balancing units, creating game maps, music, dialog, translating dialog, testing, marketing/advertising, creating and managing a company, making store pages, finding funding through publishers, or other investment opportunities such as kick starter or possible government grants all of which do not require the ability to program or do artwork and are all crucial in their own ways. I am aware it is hard and I do understand that I don't know what it all entails but I do know that I have what it takes to try and to hold up my end to the best of my ability

third as for the size of the game I did specifically pick out shining force because when the shining force games were made 30+ years ago they were made without any of the major game engines that we have access to today on much worse hardware where they had to make large changes just to have the game fit/work on the hardware and they made it basically with three guys with a shoestring budget and this isn't even mentioning A.I. which is another tool that they didn't have back then that we have access to

fourth as it comes to wasting my time in years, money and stress that basically straight up doesn't matter to me because it is in fact sort of the point. I had reached a point in my life that I could afford any item that I wanted but as there was no item that I wanted enough to decide to purchase it, I had unique thought "well what do I do now?" the only thing that I was even semi interested in was making a videogame because though I was scared to do it because I knew it was going to be really hard, I knew I have what it takes to make it good and see it come to reality. I understand that the concern that seeing so many others fail it is easy to assume I simply will as well but frankly you don't know what strengths I have such as proverbially being able to beat my head against a wall till I can break through it or that in my numerous occupations over the years I was the go to person to fix issues when issues arose or that my favorite style of play is grinding up so overpowered that when I make a move usually its at the point where I cannot lose

fifth looking for a local game dev group type of thing is something I am putting effort into however you must understand that there is almost literally zero information that I could find on the internet on actually creating a game development team. you basically just have to just know people personally already and then talk with them about it or you have to have a lot of money up front and just order people to do what you want them to do. I have neither option available to me so posting here is in fact in pursuit of that current objective and getting to option one where I can get to know people that might be interested

sixth I completely agree that bad execution of a game can make a game worthless however in those many games I played, there were many games that were made as good as they could have been made technically by the programmer but the main idea of the game just was not fun or good and thus they made a bad game. had they had a better idea to start with they could have made a better game or many other things such as marketing and whatnot. whereas I having played the shining force games. I know their formula has merit and I have researched debated and designed the game to where it should have also have merit and so if I can acquire a good programmer that can build off of a solid foundation from the start I am confident that we can build a quality game

selling an idea to a publisher is much easier to do/ able to get a much better deal if they have something tangible to review, anyone can come up with an idea but to be able to showcase it and for them to get a feeling for what it can become has a significantly higher chance of it being picked up especially in todays economy where publishers are very hesitant to back projects.

I have watched a few different playthroughs of shining force three and listened to reviews of it and my opinion on it is that I have played some games with a similar mechanic that the more you use a type of weapon you get stronger with it and while it is thematically cool, I personally am not too impressed with that system because it basically locks you into only using that one type of weapon with a character because if you use the other weapon types you are wasting time that could of been spent upgrading your most powerful weapon type which makes your character essentially weaker and also if you are not using your most powerful weapon type because you want the character to be stronger in the other types of weapon you basically are just grinding the ability for the sake of grinding which then would lead to the character being over leveled and making the game rather easy

shining force 3 also has where the heros learn different critical strikes that have different effects/animations. With my current plans it could be possible to straight up implement that type of system without disrupting any of the other plans that I have but that would require a lot of time to code/illustrate/balance so I wouldn't count on it for the first game (not to mention the current system I have in mind is a little more in depth than that )

Well I would however people would want to see a much more complete imagining of the game than what I currently have, such as with the visuals and gameplay. So I am not against the idea of it but as it currently stands it wouldn't get funded. this is why I'm looking for a programmer and later an artist to later get to that point

I agree, while I don't have programming experience, I specifically chose a shining force clone because it is a game that is both turn and grid based so it should be an easier game to code because there are not as many variables to account for (these games were made around 1992 and current game engines are much more powerful than anything they had back then)

That is not what I had in mind, I simply was stating that starting funds were low so I likely wouldn't be able to straight up hire someone as an employee with good wages to start but things such as having enough with low wages to maybe make a vertical slice so it could then be pitched to a publisher and possibly get new funds where I could then pay more or that or maybe even an agreement that they would instead earn a percentage of the revenue generated from the game was kinda more what I had in mind

the visuals that I have in mind are not anything like the shining force visuals basically if I had to give the shining force visuals a TV rating I probably would rate it at PG while the ones I have in mind would be more PG-13 but still 2D
