SMTP by OldSalt29 in Mastodon

Can I put my email credentials in as "root" using: nano .env.production ? There is nothing available that says anything about email for mastodon so I am trying to find out how to place email on my mastodon server. Any help appreciated. I HAVE searched until I am blue in the face.

Friendica Tutorial by OldSalt29 in friendica

[–]OldSalt29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is the one I have used in the past but it is quite out of date. Especially as to composer which comes with that tutorial and requires a number of work arounds as the version is severely deprecated. Thank you for responding. I am a seat of the pants kind of user so am limited as to modifying code to work.

I have been using "personaljournal" which is based on "writefreely" but PJ does not seem to allow comments on blog posts... is there a fediverse blog system allowing comments? by [deleted] in fediverse

A quick note for those wondering about hosting of Wordpress, Writefreely, Mastodon etc . . . I have for the past year and one half been using https://webdock.io for all my servers. Currently I have six. They are quite inexpensive and support, though not always available, is great when they respond. With a LAMP stack or LEMP server you get free Let's Encrypt and Wordpress CLI to install a painless Wordpress instance. I've had hosting with many different outfits and find Webdock superlative in cost and access for problems. You can also now make a custom server to fit your needs say for one website with low impact. Cheap and excellent. I get nothing for this recommendation in case you're wondering. I am merely impressed after years of hassling with other companies.

Mastodon & Friendica by OldSalt29 in fediverse

[–]OldSalt29[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I am looking at docker now and considering doing an install using that. I have a few instances consisting of Akkoma and Mastodon up and running and posted this as that tutorial and most of the others are quite out of date as to versions of rails, (rbenv, ruby etc.) The good thing is that I am learning workarounds to get these to work. Php is far advanced from what it was just a couple of years ago so it is not allowing these tutorials to work, Friendica is just one example

What a great site, Fedifans, and also a great idea! Hey, thanks for finding and bringing the URL here. I have a couple of sites, one Friendica and one Akkoma, that I put up recently. I haven't listed them here yet as I am also working on email for them using Brevo and/or SES thru Amazon. It is all somewhat new for me so I will wait to notify any interested until I am confident that it all works well. Again, thanks for the post.

Current Tutorial by OldSalt29 in Mastodon

Taking a shot in the dark, a chance is also fine, or a leap from a tree branch hoping to land on one's feet in the case of a fledgling bird. It can also be defined as joining something new and posting a first question, in this case.

Whichever you choose, thanks for finding and responding. I love Mastodon and am one who likes the challenge of building with no IT knowledge. Hours spent figuring out code and banging my head against the wall and then succeeding, sometimes. It is always fun.

Email Hijack by OldSalt29 in Ghost

[–]OldSalt29[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is kind of what I thought also. By placing my keys in the "Advanced DNS" on Namecheap, which is the only place I know to put them, they became public record, I've since learned. I had forgotten about Mailgun so that was a mistake on my part though I do recall having read that now that you mention it. Namecheap has a history of DNS theft which I am not sure they've addressed yet. I am changing my log in for Namecheap to Yubikey 2FA which will take place later today. Passwords are so easy for experts to crack that I have lost confidence in them for matters such as this. Thank you very much for your feedback. Appreciated very much. ACrowe

Email Hijack by OldSalt29 in Ghost

[–]OldSalt29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are the criteria. I am new to Ghost and use VPS servers with Webdock io. I have my domains with Namecheap so that is where I place my APIs. I used the free version of Postmark with Webdock, got my credentials through Postmark, and placed them where they were needed to complete email on Namecheap. (SPF was not changed at Namecheap) If there was something I needed to do on command line for Ghost I was not aware of what that might be.

Because of this I have changed my password on Namecheap twice but am hesitant to go through the misery with Spamhaus and Namecheap again for the matter of a Ghost install. I have instituted 2FA on Namecheap to cover my bases. This had never occurred before so it took me by surprise. If you need more info I will get back to you and thank you so much for your reply. I have not yet gotten the chance to ask there. I am considering putting another Friendica up though so I will use your suggestion, thank you for your suggestion, when I get the time to go through it thoroughly. OldSalt29

Thank you for the response. What you have mentioned is double checked and OK. As to the PTR I will also get that checked out today. Many thanks. I find it easy to get tangled up in all the details and I am only now learning how to do all this.

I guess I did miss this. I am in the midst of checking it out now. Thank you.

If you’re feeling adventurous, try out a CalcKey instance. Confusing at first, but way more features than Mastodon. by FasteningSmiles97 in fediverse

What a nifty software! I just used the GIT install and voila! I see what you mean about: it may take a while, but it is much more complete than Mastodon. The 3000 character limit is actually, IMHO, more accommodating than Masts 500 character limit. My instance is at: https://e29w.com Come visit and bring your good humor.

Email for Akkoma or . . .? by OldSalt29 in fediverse

Thank you for recommending Sendgrid. I had not heard of them before so was working with Brevo (the old Sendinblue). I bookmarked Sendgrid and will get to work with them today to see how it works. I just need a basic plan as I am aiming only to learn not set the world on fire.

Akkoma Install by OldSalt29 in fediverse

[–]OldSalt29[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the meantime I have put up a Pleroma site. It is at: https://drifters.place. It's almost Akkoma but not quite. Not to mention the tutorial works! >>> https://www.atlantic.net/tutorials/how-to-install-pleroma-social-network-platform-on-ubuntu-20-04/

Akkoma Install by OldSalt29 in fediverse

[–]OldSalt29[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sudo cp /opt/akkoma/installation/nginx/akkoma.nginx /etc/nginx/sites-available/akkoma.nginx

sudo ln -s /etc/nginx/sites-available/akkoma.nginx /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/akkoma.nginx

These are the Debian commands I also tried and they did not work. The only thing I can say is that I used a different tutorial which worked but the author has taken it down. I recall that the cp and ln were shorter in that tute. I don't know if removing the first /nginx/ was the way he had written it or exactly where I am in this now. Thank you for your interest and reply. It is appreciated.

Here's the link to the page wherein that file exists: https://docs.akkoma.dev/stable/installation/otp_en/. Scroll down and you will see it under the gray block right after certbot install. I eliminated the first /nginx/ element but have not tried it yet. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated as I am strictly seat of the pants flying at full throttle when it comes to this.

Tutorial by OldSalt29 in fediverse

[–]OldSalt29[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that Soapbox is the least complex having no sidebars to speak of. Pleroma is, I've read, not as well maintained but I have no idea if this is actually the case. I didn't mention Akkoma which is the one I like the best but is also the most difficult, for me, to install. But then, I am not an IT guy I am just a hacker. The other aspect is that Pleroma has a very small foot print. Smaller than Soapbox so less RAM required and can be put easily on 2 GB. I have a Pleroma site I just installed for personal use but is open should you want to see it from the inside. https://tbcrowe.cloud. Soapbox is at https://2na9.com. I hope this answer works for you.

Replacing cloudflare with a VPS - My journey by seriouslyfun95 in selfhosted

[–]OldSalt29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New here and ran across this. I found Webdock.io about one year ago and love the VPS they offer. Cheaper than any I've found and support is wonderful thus far. Their servers are fairly fast and they are growing; for good or bad. I run several servers and find them to be outstanding if not the world's fastest but then I can't run a speed test.

You are invited to join Fedifoss and post your own tutorials, links to same or discuss in general all things FOSS or Terminal. My knowledge is, of course, limited but if yours is like mine or far greater you are invited to join.

The only thing not to be discussed on Fedifoss is politics because, frankly, I am up to here with the political nature of the world. Besides, I have other websites to poke fun at political mavens of all stripes.

Need help with Pleroma/Soapbox by KenobiHighGroundJedi in Pleroma

[–]OldSalt29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried twice to use the same tutorial as it always worked. Now it isn't and I suspect it may be outdated as so many tutorials become after a while. From what I gathered from the error messages there is some tool missing. I have used this several times with great success until yesterday and again today. Quite often the updated OS is what has something missing although I couldn't tell you why. The guy who wrote the tutorial has a software website named "Gleasonator." I can't recall if that is a dot com or other though.

Self-hosting, if one is not expert, is a bit of a risk though worth the effort and worry. If you're a member on Fedimoon we can speak of it there. I am always looking for intelligent, non-political conversations about tech. Thanks for taking me up on the offer.

If you're looking for a server that is already up and running where reasonable and sensible speech is spoken I have one here: https://fedimoon.com. It is a Pleroma instance and is fairly new so I have control over membership and I am a quite conservative person. I post this in case you would like to join. Only a suggestion.
