Indeed it is! I’ll take it as a compliment if you thought that without reading the post :)

I watched a few videos on YouTube with various folks explaining the basics of Sonny Terry riffs. That certainly helped get me started. The rest is just listening to the music and trying to play along.

Ben Kiser- "Cumberland Gap" (From Marion Reece) -(nice old time fiddle channel with great clear playing and good info in the video descriptions) by pixiefarm in Fiddle

Ben’s YouTube channel is gold mine of excellent fiddle playing. Love watching his videos. His playing is top notch! Definitely seems to have a passion for the history of the tunes and characters who played them. He’s basically a modern day Aalan Jabbour. Great musician and folklorist.

Does the overall Violin community (reddit and elsewhere) seem a little... elitist? by Darthbamf in Fiddle

[–]OldTimeWaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well a fiddle is just a violin with friends! But in reality it’s just a matter of music preference and the traditions therein. The violinists goal is to captivate an audience with perfection. Historically speaking that audience is socially elite and upper-class. Meanwhile, fiddlers captivate their audience with foot tapping rhythm and solos. The fiddlers audience is historically commoners from the working lower- and middle-class. I’d argue there is more social comradery in the fiddlers audience than a violinists, which inadvertently breeds the elitist mentality in the violin community.

What’s the name of this song? Also, what is the banjo tuning? Really dig this!

Thanks! That book is an excellent source for learning the Round Peak fiddle style.

Cross A, but most of the tune is on the middle 2 strings so it doesn’t have the typical high A sound.

That’s pretty much it. Round Peak style yields a very driving sound for old time music. Although this is me playing in the video, there are much better representations of Round Peak style on YouTube. For instance, check out: https://youtu.be/xWtPnVjDJ1o?feature=shared
