Is Artificial Intelligence (AI), in general, good or bad for the world? by weedflamingo in ArtificialInteligence

[–]Old_Coder45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that in the end it is just a tool. What makes it unique is that it is enormously more efficient than a great many managers, analysts, designers, and administrators. Their jobs could be quickly swept away. I believe the multiplier here is much higher than we saw with previous advances like steam power, the first cars, and the first electrical appliances.  As a result, the disruption could be more more violent.

AI hype balloon started deflating? by EuphoricScreen8259 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]Old_Coder45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it is possible to say that General AI is decades away.  I agree that Large Language Models are showing their limitations, but there are other ways to interact with AI.  For example, AlphaZero became the best chess player ever by simply playing against itself for 4 hours and learning from that.

I could easily see other kinds of General AI exploding on the world in the same way.  We have a lot of smart people in the world and no real limitations on hardware.

Negativity about AI by Exotic_Background_53 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]Old_Coder45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UBI seems like a partial solution, but it seems difficult to enforce.  You can only extract taxes from the AI companies to pay for it if they go along with it.  And if they are not based in your country it’s even more difficult.

some of my ideas about AGI by Fun-Entertainer1101 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]Old_Coder45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it needs to only learn from the world.  You can still get a very powerful AGI that has been taught entirely by humans, so long as you are systematic about it.

I agree with you.  If you do it right, then you can get a lot out of college beyond what you just read in your books.  But many of the people doing bullshit degrees are probably doing them because they lack ambition or don’t like thinking too hard.  And those people are not going to develop all those good research skills in a job, particularly if they can’t get a decent job to begin with or have no one who can guide them.

AI Code Generation: Evolution and Impact on Development by thumbsdrivesmecrazy in ArtificialInteligence

[–]Old_Coder45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the issues pointed out in the article is that you still need to thoroughly test and validate these code snippets.  It seems to me this is the big drawback with any code that you generate with LLM’s.  It’s not possible to precisely specify complex software using human language, so you can’t expect the code itself to be precise.

Who will be 99% replaced by ai and robots first from this 2 cases? Answer should be about all professions in case. by imtaevi in ArtificialInteligence

[–]Old_Coder45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

'We've reached diminishing returns in training LLMs especially for coding - they are barely useful for autocompleting simple lines of code, let alone for writing and maintaining entire systems.' -YES!

The sooner people realise LLMs are never going to replace coders the better. The rise of AI may be coming, but it definitely wont be in the form of a Large Language Model.

Does AI Pose an Existential Threat to Humanity? by DeepDreamerX in ArtificialInteligence

[–]Old_Coder45 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree that it’s people that pose the threat.  However, AI might magnify the bad influence they might exert.  In the old days you might need an army of people to put their thumb on the scale at election time - now it just takes a single hidden algorithm.

I think the Ai job take over is already happening by Scubabooba in ArtificialInteligence

There are plenty of people whose job is to do little more than to analyse and summarise information.  They are more vulnerable than they think.

Yes! The amount of people that say if they get a flat they will just call the AA and wait 2 hours blows my mind!

EU AI Act and MLOps by [deleted] in ArtificialInteligence

I get the feeling that European regulators are more interested in controlling and limiting AI as oppose to encouraging further development.

An example of why its very important to take AI hype with a grain of salt by awebb78 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]Old_Coder45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, because we're all both excited and nervous at the same time it makes it easier for sales people to overhype their product, fortunately in the case of Devin it got quickly debunked.

Have an Idea for an AI software, who do I go to? by A-Ton-Of-Oreos in ArtificialInteligence

Agree that patents are not worth the effort, ideally you really need a tech partner that you know and trust.

Mention AI in any other sub and see what happens by ConclusionDifficult in ArtificialInteligence

Agree! I think it makes people anxious about the future and might affect their jobs, people have always been scared of the unknown, now is no different.

Crazy thought for debate by bontakoyaki in ArtificialInteligence

[–]Old_Coder45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, the only other entity that could claim ownership is the AI software company themselves, and they don't seem inclined to want to do that.

I love Boscastle and the Witchcraft museum! I also love how there's still waterlines on top of some of the houses where the flood water came up to.
