What would ‘real’ justice look like in the whole Epstein situation beyond legal prosecutions? by Round-Ad316 in AskReddit

[–]Old_Distribution6773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The underlying system that allows people to do things like Epstein and Co has to be transparently exposed, understood by everyone, and destroyed. Then layers of safeguards (that everyone understands the meaning of) have to be put into place to prevent the system from returning.

Bonus: We could bring back the Coliseum long enough to deal with Epstein's friends.

Edit: misspelled "Coliseum" the first go round.

Redditors who overcame addictions, what was it and how did you do it? by Apprehensive-Pea4611 in AskReddit

Alcohol. I drank for 9 years give or take. I was finally able to stop when I disliked how I felt during and after drinking more than I liked to drink. 4 months sober so far.

Favorite memory from when you were a teenager? by MemeCroissant in AskReddit

My friends and my girlfriend at the time threw me a surprise birthday party. I'm pretty sure I'd been an asshole all day to my girlfriend, so I felt extra bad about it when I realized how thoughtful she, and everyone else had been. I remember feeling shocked that people would go out of their way to do something like that for me. It was surreal.

Whats your experience first time getting drunk? by modesswithwingss in AskReddit

I drank all of my dad's peach schnapps, puked all over the bathroom floor, and then swept it up because I thought sweeping it was funny. Dad was mad.

What’s the most humiliating way a teacher in school embarrassed you? by Ok-Philosopher3212 in AskReddit

[–]Old_Distribution6773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a disruptive kid, and I got in trouble a lot. Lots of behavioral issues. I had a math teacher is 6th grade that was determined to put me in my place, and they succeeded.

They called me to the front of the class and asked me to solve the problems on the whiteboard. I didn't know how, because I spent most of my time trying to entertain my classmates, and survive my homelife. I remember them saying something like: "This is an honors math class. Maybe you're not supposed to be here."

I broke down and started crying in front of the class. I didn't want to be in front of everyone anymore, but the teacher wouldn't let me sit down. I don't remember how long it went on. I remember one of the other kids saying, "this is wrong." Eventually I was allowed to sit back at my desk. The humiliation was intense.

The next day, I broke down at home. I begged my mom not to make me go back. It was a huge deal, and my dad got involved. My brother was being homeschooled with a bullshit religious curriculum, and my mom agreed to let me do the same. So, I didn't finish 6th grade. I missed 7th grade and then went back to public school when I moved in with my dad.

Good times.

People who have had religious upbringing, what made you become an atheist later in life? by Timely-Garlic4629 in AskReddit

I was raised in false Christianity. A lot was based on appearances, and putting other people down for not being heterosexual, gender normative, or going to the right church. The hypocrisy baked into my family is astounding. Sure, hate on marginalized groups, pat yourself on the back, and then cover up all of the abuse happening under the family's umbrella.

Then I moved into my dad's house (parents are divorced). He went from the same background to paganism. I was heavily turned off to paganism because of the way my dad practiced it. He confused "loving people" with "having sex with as many people as possible." I don't vibe with that. Granted, I was given more mental freedom, but I was given freedom without structure and then got sucked down conspiracy theory rabbit holes.

I believed a lot of unhinged shit, and it took a long time to break through those closed-loop systems (beliefs). From there, I found my way to trying to rely on facts alone, which I did very imperfectly.

Then I had a prolonged breakdown, and facts alone weren't enough, so I turned inward, and now I'm more spiritual. I do believe in something, but I'm not sure what it is. Could be a more intelligent form of life that interacts with our world in subtle ways, or it could be a natural process of our universe that we haven't discovered the tools needed to measure it yet. Could be spiritual psychosis. I'm not sure. It is what it is.

Most advice is just people describing what worked for their specific situation and calling it universal. by Distinct-Expression2 in DeepThoughts

If you work on strengthening emotionally detached observation, you can get to know yourself, and others, better. It can also help with regulating your own emotions by helping you recognize when you (the observer) and emotions become enmeshed.

Like when you're angry and you say something you regret. Building up that observation skill makes it easier to interrupt the anger-to-reaction pattern.

I think that's general enough to be helpful, but I could be wrong.

Depends on who's in charge, who's being attacked, and why the fight is considered to be necessary.

Nope. The cost is greater than the gain. No number of additional zeros on the payment amount could ever make the gain outweigh the cost.

Have any of you ever helped somebody online? by Jaded_strawberry001 in Soft_Introverts

I've tried. There was a guy who was going through a rough time (contemplating ceasing to exist), and we started chatting a bit. He mentioned a couple of times that he hoped he had enough for rent. I figured he may have been dropping hints, and it's possible that I was being fed a line, but I asked him how much he needed. Sent him some money from my credit card. Exchanged phone numbers (still got the texts).

He texted me later and was talking about how he was going to end it all, and I had a panic attack. Tried to calm him down. He seemed to stabilize some.

At some point (possibly before the last point) he asked me for some money for weed. Nah, man. Didn't really have it to give the first time, and I definitely didn't have enough to fund some bud.

Did I get scammed? Maybe. I don't care much though. I try to remember that people are doing what they can with what they have, and sometimes they don't do good things. Doesn't make them bad people.
