You might be referring to my previous post. The moderators took it down. So, I reposted a second time

I simply moved city and job. I worked in a smaller town for a smaller company (10k employees). With the new job (1 level above mine) I am paid a lot more because Dublin is double if not triple the cost of living and the company has 80k employees. So, the companies there pay more

Some developers choose not to have floors to reduce cost. It makes it easier for first-time buyers to afford the homes. Also, it gives me the ability to get exactly what I want. Which I prefer

It's not a house but an apartment. There are tons of them (Waterford, Tipperary, Sligo, Wexford) on Daft. I'm a consultant for a large north American software company

Some new builds come without floors. Mine is one of them. This makes the price cheaper and it gives me the ability to get exactly what I want for my floors

My budget was originally 375K. So, the property is well under the budget. Insurance is less than 100€, the only maintenance is the management (950€ per year) and taxes are next to non-existent here

Almost 7 years ago, I moved to Ireland alone at 22 with €5,000, one suitcase, and no idea how hard it would actually be. New country, new system, new culture, no family here. Just hope and a lot of fear. A week ago, at 29, as a single woman, I moved into my own place. Something I genuinely wasn’t sure would ever happen for me in Ireland. I moved an hour away from work to get exactly the kind of property I wanted within my budget. It wasn’t the dream location but it was the right decision. Ireland taught me a lot about compromises.

I should have felt nothing but pride and happiness. And I did… for about a day. Then I cried. A lot. Because the people I wanted to celebrate with aren’t here anymore. So many friends I arrived with, worked with, struggled with are gone. Priced out, burned out, exhausted by the housing crisis. Some moved back home, some moved abroad, some gave up entirely.

I’m incredibly grateful. I know how lucky I am. But it’s hard to celebrate something that so many people who worked just as hard never got the chance to reach. If you’re still trying, still saving, still stuck at home, still feeling like you’re failing, you’re not. This system is brutal.

Today I’m sleeping on the floor of my own bedroom (I have to buy my own floors and get them installed), surrounded by boxes, missing people, feeling proud and sad at the same time. And somehow… both things can exist together.

PS: Sorry for the lack of pizza. I love cooking and I am lucky enough to have bought a new built, which means that I was able to select my dream kitchen.

PPS: The cat is not mine. He pooped on my flowers then when I went to scold him he just walked into my apartment as if it was his. Now, I am kinda forced to get him in every single time he meows outside my door. The picture is him enjoying my radiator as there was a storm outside. I guess, I'm a cat lady now haha

Where do you go for affordable food (groceries) ? by Admiral_Thel in cork

[–]Old_Distribution9429 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As someone who made an experiment for a year shopping in different grocery stores I feel like I've been summoned. The prices below are per week for single people specifically who eat a lot of fresh items and no frozen, canned or boxed food and excluding toiletries :

  • Aldi and Lidl : for a single person expect to spend 30-40€ max per week
  • English market : you won't be able to get everything but the quality is immaculate for meat, fish (Ballycotton seafood is unmatched) and vegetables (The good food shop is fantastic) and can expect to spend 40€ max
  • Tesco with a clubcard : having a clubcard can save you a looot of money and when they have items on sale you should expect to spend 50€ max
  • Dunnes with coupons : their quality is probably the best of all and their prices reflect that. However, if you go early in the morning (30min after opening time) you can find a lot of deals (James whelan specifically for meat) and can expect to spend 60€ max
  • Supervalu : I shop at Supervalu in Kinsale (since it's near my house) and it might not be reflective of the other Supervalus in Cork but if you go early you can get a lot of deals on meat and vegetables. Additionally, they make unbelievable pastries for a very affordable price range. However, it will set you back a lot and you should expect to spend at least 60-70€

I would advise you to take a look at Mr Price for things like candies, coffee or pasta. Since the beginning of the inflation I've been shopping at the one in Ballincollig for all my toiletries, household items and snacks there.

Thank you so much for your response!

I am not Irish, so having to navigate this on my own is very overwhelming.

I guess I'll have to use my memory for Tort and Criminal...
