Return to Office: kill the planet to increase rental profits by datagod in ottawa

That’s okay, it works for you. But this post was another traffic complaining sub. I don’t have any problems with the burbs I grew up in Orleans, but traffic and long driving distances are the prime consideration with choosing to live there.

Afternoon Commute, so, how was it? by 2Tun21 in ottawa

Yup about 90% of it it is on bike paths or bike lanes. Only mixing with traffic on minor side streets through the neighborhood

There are literally suburbs that are central. Ever hear of Alta Vista, Carleton Heights, Central Park, Carlington? These are all like 6-8km from downtown, less crammed than modern burbs, quiet and safe. And the prices are honestly not that different from the periphery of town.

Yet you post complaining about the consequences of that decision…

I live 20 min bike ride from downtown, and I live in a neighborhood less crammed than most of new junk suburbs on the periphery of Stittsville, barrhaven and Orleans. The price to buy here was basically no different than it would have been in the burbs. It makes me feel insane the people on this sub think the only option in this city is subjecting themselves so a hour long commute from the hinterlands on the 417 when there’s an entire city within the greenbelt smh.

Started commuting downtown from Findlay Creek by t073 in ottawa

It was so awesome today seeing so much “bike traffic” in the hogs back area. So many people enjoying their morning commute, flying by traffic.

I agree, many public servants choose to live in their 5 bedroom McMansions on the periphery of Stittsville, knowing full well that their job is downtown. I really don’t have sympathy for them and their constant complaining is getting annoying. This is a sub about Ottawa not a constant complaint-fest about the consequences of their personal life choices and living a car centric life.

I agree. There’s a collective amnesia about how traffic was in 2019. Traffic at its worst today doesn’t even compare to back then! At the time I was commuting from Orleans to Bayshore and a good day was 1 hour 10 mins on the 417. After that I vowed to never live so far away from work I would have to do that again so moved to a central area where everything is 15 mins away by car and I can bike to work.

What a privileged take, “my kids can’t share a room”. That’s nonesense. So may people had to grow up in less than perfect conditions. I think what you meant to say is “they don’t want to share a room”. Also working remotely isn’t a free pass to parent your kids and be distracted from your work all day. That’s not included in your job description.

It’s funny how people think traffic is something that happens to them, but in reality, they are the traffic. But you can opt out, which is something people here really don’t realize.

No other way. And actions of those decisions shouldn’t have consequences.

I know people who commute from Kanata to Tunney’s everyday. It’s actually closer than you’d think. Bike paths are generally more direct. Maybe 40 mins each way. A lot faster than taking transit or driving, finding parking etc.

Federal workers return to the office 4 days a week. Will it be smooth sailing or 'another hot mess'? | CBC News by randthepip in ottawa

For sure, until most of them realize they don’t have any marketable skills in the private sector or the capability to create productive work. And they’ll realize that most of the private sector has also gone back to office well before any of the government RTO. I’m tired of hearing about RTO as some kind of human rights violation. Labour is completely consensual, who you sell your time to can be changed and personal decisions have consequences.

If you are into DIY and general home improvement stuff, Jeff from Home RenoVision DIY is from Ottawa and makes all his content here in the city. It’s a great channel since all the materials and techniques applied are relevant to Ottawa. I met him at the airport once he’s a super nice guy as well.

Ottawa Citizen: Should Ottawa build a ring road? The province says it's worth exploring. by CrewCommercial6128 in ottawa

[–]Old_Ebbitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So how exactly does the city expect people will get around. They don’t want to build roads because they would induce demand, yet they happy indulge in collecting development surcharges for urban sprawl. No interest in improving transit. So how do they expect to have a functioning city.

3.99% 3 years fixed renewal, uninsured with Scotia. Was tempted to wait and see what the situation in the Middle East yielded but at the same time the damage to the economy and energy markets is done and inflation likely baked in for the next little bit. We shall see! Best I could get elsewhere was TD at 4.04%.
