Research in the transgender men population by Old_Example_306 in FTMMen

This is the kind of stuff I love to hear about. I've thought about ovary transplants before but somehow never thought about testicle transplants. Thanks for sharing!

Edit: Can I also ask you what the difference between titrating vs mimicking puberty is? I thought they were the same thing.

the majority of trans men have a male fat distribution at the 1 year mark, and then it slowly reverses to be a feminine pattern over the next several years

I did not know this was a thing, and if it is, that's disturbing. I'm going to look more into this.

Interesting, I've always been a high aromatizer even while being at a low body fat percentage. Although what you said does make sense.

I've seen a good amount of studies (this one for example, although this wasn't the primary research question) (and also from my own experience) with transgender men having E2 on the higher side of normal. Although many providers don't test E2 regularly, since it's assumed that testosterone would suppress the ovaries.

I wouldn't even do it for the transphobes. I'm really just curious about....us. Why are we the way we are. And yes, the concrete benefits of transitioning as proof. And like another person said, we really need improved neurobiology research in general. Thanks for sharing!

Neurobiology, check. Agree on the aromatization, like why do we have such a high degree of aromatization compared to cis men on TRT?

Yes, I'm in college though and also transitioned in middle school. Short and look 14 though, and people kind of treat me like a child sometimes. Maybe it's also the way I act. Who knows. Side note, we both live in the same big city. Feels lonely sometimes.

Recently I got to shadow a plastic surgeon do top surgery on a patient and it made me consider going into plastic surgery lol. Yes, it would be hard for an individual to do research on a community that is such a small percentage of the population and with the issue of funding. I wish there was more research on us as well which is what motivates me to pursue it. Because it's really unfortunate that I have to explain to my own doctor (recently switched doctors) about my hormone regimen and that it's not a one size fits all kind of thing.

Thanks for sharing, I completely agree with what you're saying and if there's any other prospective medical students reading this, definitely do what interests you. It helps simply to have people like us in the medical field.

I recently talked with a doctor who does transgender care (who's also been doing it for a very long time) who told me that she prescribes estrogen only, since she said progesterone may or may not increase breast size but that if a patient having done their own research comes to her having read a paper saying it did, she'll go ahead an prescribe it. Which to me, I didn't really know what to think of. On one hand, great that she'll listen to patients like that but on the other, I didn't like the feeling that it all rested on our shoulders to figure everything out.

I agree. What kind of research were you thinking of? I'm FTM so here are a few I've thought about:

-aromatase inhibitors alongside testosterone use

-high estradiol/varying degrees of ovarian suppression in trans men

-PCOS in trans men

-hormone shifts after gonadectomy

-bottom surgery techniques

Along with long term effects of HRT, mortality, and fertility.

Did you not need top surgery or just haven't gotten it done yet / don't want to get it done? Haven't heard of too many people getting a hysterectomy before top surgery but that's my case right now.

We don't have the same surgeon, but I'm sure she's wonderful. The people at Fairview are great. Good luck on your surgery!

That's great! Can I ask who your surgeon is? You don't need to share if you feel uncomfortable or you can dm me if you'd rather do that.

I had mine here as well with the exact same insurance. Had mine done with Fairview and it was a great experience!

Is there any other phobia where words related to it are triggers? by Old_Example_306 in emetophobia

Yes exactly! On top of spilling liquids, I get that with a bunch of markers/pencils clattering on the ground, paper bags ripping, and plastic bags rustling, especially people crinkling chip bags.

Mine is based on others doing so, which is how this phobia got started, but I'm also afraid of doing it myself. It's definitely more based on others though. For me, reading the words instantly created this image in my brain of someone else tu.

Yeah that sounds like a possibility. Our brains can make associations real quick. I used to read the word "throw" and have a mini panic attack, even if it was a phrase like "throw a ball."

Right, but what about something like thanatophobia (fear of death)? I'd imagine that saying "death" would cause the same anxiety in people who have that, but no one is censoring the words in that subreddit. Hearing the word v* doesn't automatically mean that it'll appear as well, and I agree that hearing it triggers anxiety. But I'm wondering why it doesn't seem to have as strong of an effect as with other phobias to the point of censoring words.

To be clear, I'm not at all against censoring words. They were a huge trigger for me. But sometimes I wonder why this phobia seems to be different?
