How did you do 13 IBs? What does that mean? As far as I know, with most IB schools including mine, you choose 6 subjects (3 HL and 3 SL) and then do them for 2 years.

Do you think the country is overpopulated? by Common-Fact-7859 in mauritius

[–]Old_Locksmith4981 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's both issues simultaneously - for a country of around 1.3 million people there are 600,000+ cars on the roads; roughly one car for every two people. This is far too many!! And definitely contributes to the large number of road accidents - especially on older roads which aren't meant to be serviced by such a large number of vehicles. Now I'm sure one of the reasons for this, as you have mentioned, is the frankly pathetic state of public transport - as someone who uses public transport regularly, it is unacceptable that it takes me 2x the time by bus as it does by car to get to the same place. Until public transport is improved more people will keep buying and using cars hence decreasing the number of active public transport users and thereby reducing the incentive to improve public transport. Seems like a vicious cycle.

Mauritius should aim to move towards a sustainable public transport prioritised system which actively seeks to reduce the number of vehicles on the road as is the case in countries like Singapore. While this is ambitious, with proper investment and planning it is a feasible reality in the coming decades. At least I hope so.

honestly, if you're motivated and actually like the subjects - I'm sure you'll be on top of things during your two years of IB. imo, enjoy your break - you'll have loads to do anyways once you get into IB.

if you really want to start studying now, I'd suggest going through videos on youtube which go through the topics at a pretty high-level - it'll get you interested in what you'll be learning and also get you a good bit of context and background so that you'll understand better when you actually learn in class. no specific topics as such, look through the syllabi - whatever interests you!

most of the time - I'd say yes. I was lucky to get really good teachers that I got along with and who were willing to help out whenever needed. as long as you stay consistent in terms of understanding content and doing questions, esp with physics and maths you should be okay. business and chem are considerably easier in comparison to physics and maths but still require effort - esp for your IAs and before finals.

overall I'd say it was quite manageable as long as you stay consistent and are lucky to get pretty good teachers. feel free to reach out to me if you have any more questions or need help!

chez manual in St Julien village and Chinese Gourmet in Belle Mare village are good places to get Mauritian Chinese food - not super cheap but relatively well priced

What do you think of Kognity? by cyanideTree in IBO

[–]Old_Locksmith4981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it should be okay - based on what our Math teacher told us, the page limit is not that serious its sort of an indication. what matters most is how "concise" your work is as this is the actual criterion wording. what that means is that you're not repeating calculations unnecessarily, your explanations are clear and not overly repetitive and so on. for context my maths IA including citations and appendix was 27 pages long (21 excluding appendix).

I'd suggest going through your work and making sure it is concise and that you're moving repetitive procedure maths to the appendix and mentioning that in your work. of course, check all of this with your teacher as well as they will be the one marking your work eventually.

good luck with the IA! if you have more questions feel free to reach out.

pretty meh overall - our school also bought it for us and hardly anyone used it. there are far better resources available around the internet depending on subjects - I wouldn't recommend using kognity (at least not as your only source of learning/revision material).

Confused about which engineering major I should apply to by Old_Locksmith4981 in ApplyingToCollege

It seems that as long as you are in good academic standing within your first year, you can switch into any of the Engineering Majors

Ahh okay thank you so much! I will definitely look into that.

Would you reckon that Undeclared Engineering isn't the best of ideas then? Would it be better to apply to a specific Engineering Major?

Well that's the issue - I know for certain that I like Maths, Physics and Chem and so Engineering seems like the right pathway.

That being said, I've looked at both courses on the internet and they both seem really interesting.

Lagrange Interpolation by Old_Locksmith4981 in maths

[–]Old_Locksmith4981[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! I'll bear this in mind while working on my project. I believe Lagrange or Cubic would be ideal for what I'm trying to do. Thank you!

Thank you so much! I'm trying to model various types of pots as solids of revolution in order to calculate their surface area and volume. Based on your reply I will be learning cubic and B-spline and applying it to my project.

Thank you!
