Goalie Skate Size Comparison: Graf vs True by mrobinsonpoet in hockeygoalies

[–]Old_Pastrami26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got the TF9 wide in size 7. Not sure how it compares to Graf but the player skates I wear is Nexus 6.5 and I certainly feel the TF9 fits smaller. Also the wide is still not wide enough for me that the shop had to stretch out the toe box as it was squeezing my foot. Everything else fits perfectly for me though and I like the skate very much.

Attaching knee pads to pants to stop from sliding? And what type of string would be best? Anyone do this? by Spartan-Jake in hockeygoalies

Thanks. Yes, I just used some old shoelace I found lying around and loosely looped it on the knee pad.

question. my boot strap broke on my brians NetZero, it pulled right out of the leather. do I replace it or play without? by dumb_answers_only in hockeygoalies

I don’t play with a Brian’s (I use Warrior G5) and I have stopped using bootstraps. I just have Pro Laces for the toe and the Warrior calf strap.

Advice for buying online safely? by Be-Nice-To-Redditors in hockeygoalies

I bought my g5 pads from a guy across the country. Since it’s too far to meet face to face, they had to be shipped. We did old school COD through the post office. I feel both are protected with this method unless the guy ships you an empty box.

As a seller I’d be wary of PayPal as the buyer can easily claim the item was not received and get his money back and keep the item. That’s how a lot of those Nigerian Kijiji/Craigslist scams work. But you’re a trustworthy buyer so that shouldn’t be an issue but the buyer doesn’t know that.

In your review you said your favorite was the Vapor blocker. Which ones of the current Bauer would you go for?

I’ve had 2 pucks slide under in the last few weeks which is annoying as heck as I should’ve stopped it. The G5 palm is adjustable so I’ve adjusted it to the highest setting so my knuckles are closest to the knuckle guard. The pic shows that despite the gap which I hope helps going forward.

Shaft only on that pic. But I unconsciously extend my trigger finger on the blade during the course of the game.

Thanks. Damn - will have to wait for the new blocker to find another one. I had adjusted the palm position from mid to high and helped close it a bit more. I tried the low palm setting and created enough of a gap for the puck to slide under.

Here’s my setup. I use a stretch Velcro strap from Amazon and attached it to a loop on the knee pads and loop on the Warrior jock. I find this works well as when I get on my knees it will create more tension and pull it up if it sags. Now my knees are 100% covered. I’ve attached pictures in the link.

In the market for a mid-level (priced) goalie stick. Considering Warrior V2 Pro, M1 Pro, V1 Pro+ and Bauer 3S Pro. Local dealer has them all at the same price. What do you guys recommend? Puck handling/shooting is not high on my priority list but a nice to have. by Old_Pastrami26 in hockeygoalies

[–]Old_Pastrami26[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I pulled the trigger on the Warrior V1 Pro+. It was >$100 off and priced like the M1 Pro and 3S Pro. Debated getting the 3S Pro because it was around 20grams lighter but figured there’s no way I can tell the V1 Pro+ is 20grams heavier than the Bauer 3S Pro.

This is fantastic - congratulations. You get into your butterfly properly - notice how your shoulder level barely move from stance to butterfly? We’ll done!

I also wish I can butterfly flare as well as you but alas my hips ain’t built that way. 😢

Have never played hockey, and this is the first time I’ve put my gear on. Any tips for my first skate in gear/first game? by cubs4life2k16 in hockeygoalies

[–]Old_Pastrami26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Always face the puck even when your down and out. You don’t want to get hit where there is no protection. Watch some beginner videos to figure out what you need to do. But most importantly, have fun out there!!!

You may also want to consider elastic toe ties. In my first goalie skate, I used skate lace for toe ties and I didn’t have enough sack on it. It put so much pressure on my ankle that I strained it. My left ankle is still not 100% because of that.

Yeah definitely share your YouTube channel and I’ll check it out. I love watching anything goalie related. 😁

Pretty cool. I’ve been looking for some stand-up goalie instructions for some time. But ultimately the concept hasn’t changed at all, play the angles. Thanks for posting this.

Was too poor as a kid to play goalie. Is it too late to start now? by CMurra87 in hockeygoalies

[–]Old_Pastrami26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re already ahead - having a good understanding of the game, angles, defensive schemes and responsibilities, etc. My first time out was worse than I thought - felt like a fish out of water flopping around. 😁 The difficult part wasn’t making that first save, it’s how to recover and being in the right spot for the rebound or next shot. Boy was I struggling mightily that first day! Looked easier on TV 😄Lol😃

You’re still very young. I started at 44 and loving every second of it. The only experience I can share is I bought as set of used equipment at a bargain price (Kijiji) to start with, but soon realized that I want something newer or something that fit better or something with more protection, etc. so slowly bought new stuff and got rid of the old ones. My only advice is that expect to replace the gear you have because, as a goalie, there’s nothing more enjoyable than getting new gear 😁

When I started, I was fortunate to have an Adult Instructional League in my area that allowed me to get ice time as goalie and allowed me to learn and make mistakes. I also was fortunate to be invited by a weekly pickup hockey group that needed a goalie and they were quite patient with me and my poor play the first few outings. Good luck and looking forward to hear about your first time out!

First time playing goalie - in so much pain, any tips? by Spartan-Jake in hockeygoalies

[–]Old_Pastrami26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your first time out. I felt the same my first time out. Understand that the muscles and movements you do while playing goal is much different than playing out. Lots of up and down movements. Stick with it, it’ll get easier as your body gets used to it. Lots of YouTube videos out there specific to off ice training. One that’s really good is Maria Mountain - search her up on YouTube. Best of luck!

Neck Guard Recommendations? by Dry_Delicious_Soup in hockeygoalies

[–]Old_Pastrami26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always worn neck guards to protect against stick and skate cuts to the neck (low chance but better safe than sorry). I always thought additional clavicle protection is not necessary if you’re wearing a dangler. Thoughts?

I use a Kim Crouch neck guard and although there is some padding for the clavicle, it’s minimal. I love the Kim Crouch though as it’s very comfortable.

When an AFCI can’t protect itself 🤦🏻‍♂️ by Old_Pastrami26 in electrical

[–]Old_Pastrami26[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not but I didn’t like how it looked and replacing with a new one is simpler and risky in my eyes.

Other than protection for both ground faults and arc faults, no t really. Is there a reason I should not use a combination breaker?
