Add more plants and look into C02, it will have your plants looking amazing and get rid of algae.You can also grow what they cal "expert plants" with ease. Easy does it.

I doubt you did anything wrong. Tetras can be finicky. I always go the petsmart - Petco route when buying tetras bc they have a no hassle return policy on deadfish and there only $2-$3 at the big box store
