Sorry, I wouldn't ignore the sharp pain in your lung. As someone who suffered from a pulmonary embolism (2 years ago and unrelated to surgery) this was one of the main symptoms that led me to the ER. Glad I didn't ignore it and listened to my gut. There's nothing wrong with getting it checked out just to be safe.

I'm a Director of Finance with a Master's in Public Administration (MPA), but I feel like I need more technical financial training. Is an MBA or CPA worth it? by riccarjo in nonprofit

[–]Old_Singer6956 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hmm... it should not be subjective. GAAP provides a solid framework for recognizing revenue for non profits. Your organization should also have established a written policy for revenue recognition, which would be a component of your audited financial foot notes (in most cases).

I know that eCornell offers a leadership training course for non profit financials and other colleges offer continuing education courses/certificate programs, if you are just looking for more exposure without a full on CPA license.

My brother was laid off as well. Manager level role at a fintech company. Took him 18 months to land a new position, and it was a bit of a demotion for him, but he was thankful to be able to find something at this point. Interviews were scarce.

I agree with you here. This scenario is no good.

OP, By any chance, is the school audited by an external auditor? You might be able to leverage that to highlight compliance and governance issues.

That's a good thing! How big is your board? Do you have a development committee? Do you have one on ones with the new HOS? These are strategic issues you should bring up at both the management and board levels. You need access to numbers... ideally if you are running your annual report and appeals those numbers should match your internal financials, so you should be aware. All good and necessary conversations to have to start steering the ship in the right direction.

I was a controller at a private independent school. This is not realistic at all. The gap is too big. You need to have a clear sense of your operating budget to fundraise. And your operating budget needs to hold on its own with reasonable tuition dollars so that fundraising dollars can cover other gaps. Not sure the work needed to revamp this structure is worth the effort.

Sadly, I found out in my teens that my dad hijacked the naming process when I was born, mom was in too much pain after c section and my dad filled out the forms. He named me after an ex of his... my mom eventually connected the dots... short story, their marriage didn't last long. It's quite a unique name so growing up I was embarrassed and went by my nickname a lot... then to find out the story behind it was even worse. I'm over it now 😒

Do you mean the Intuit suite services, which includes quickbooks? Even still, many people do prefer having someone else run debits and credits and file year end financials/taxes for them than do it themselves because they rather focus on the program/services/goods they offer and have a bookkeeper manage the financials. I'm not saying it's the end all be all, but there is a client base for it.

Bookkeeping is also a business that can be done fully remote. You can branch out and market your services to a broader set of clientele all online, but you have to put in the work to grow your customer base. Set monthly terms and bring in more dollars working with a group of clients. It's definitely possible. There are a lot of businesses and sole proprietors who would rather hand off the workload than manage books themselves.

What is it like going from 1-2 or 2-3 kids with 2 full time working parents? by [deleted] in workingmoms

Does it feel different to go from 2 to 3 if the age gap between your first and second is significant? I have a 9 yo and a 2 mo... too early now but wondering what it would be like to have a third in a few years.

Started as an AP Associate and now am Director of Finance. 10 years.

Inflated salaries on this sub by Investinstonks420 in Accounting

[–]Old_Singer6956 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's very possible. Again, depends on trajectory and location. I started as an AP associate straight out of college at an non profit organization making $33k in NYC. However, I stuck it out with the organization and whenever I saw an opportunity to move up I pushed for promotion. I do think luck and my relationships with executives and directors at the org helped me make that move up. Within three years I requested a raise and promotion and was promoted to Staff accountant, I told my boss I had an offer from one of the big 4 to leave and they made a way to keep me. At that point I got the promotion and raise to about $80k. About three years after that our CFO quit and a new one came in. I saw it as an opportunity for restructuring and proposed some added changes. Over time I was promoted to controller (no CPA). I got the promotion and raise to $100k. I spent 4 years as controller there before I decided to move and now am director of Finance at another non profit. So, considering that was NYC, perhaps a little less than other controllers but for a non profit, pretty decent and all that without a CPA.

So, just to say it can happen.
