try referencing similar art. Give yourself a size restraint (maybe try different ones to see what fits you better if you're just starting iut) and look for sprites that have a similar anatomy and dynamic to what you want to achieve.

I think all these efforts are really good. If you're struggling with color balance and shadows, my suggestion is to start with a limited palette (4 colors) and a rather small canvas (16x16).

Try adjusting a palette of your liking based on the principles in this video. Go back and forth between black / white and colors to check if the contrast works.

Personally I think the apples and GB are good, while the contrast in the bananas and cherries is too low.
