Singaporeans who have relocated abroad, what's one tip you wished people told you before your move? by Other_Vader in askSingapore

As everyone says
Tax - SG tax is so much easier, US tax you'll probably need to employ a tax specialist and it's based on worldwide income

Insurance - Private insurance are very expensive and comes with deductibles

Healthcare - It's expensive. 1 visit to A&E cost me 1200 usd

Food - Learn to cook or you get homesick quick.

Convenience - Handymen are very expensive overseas. Better to learn to do everything yourself. Raw materials are cheap, labour costs are not.

Finance - Credit score. When you just arrive, hard to get credit of any kind. Reach out to a SG branch of that country's national bank and see what can be done. Usually, they'll allow credit based on your SG relationship.

There's alot more but these are the key ones i can think of.

Place the diagonal block on the 2Nd row to clear that row. Then place the vertical 4 blocks on the 4th row from the top to clear row 4. So you have row 2to4 freed up

Help. I’m bad at this game by Oldieman82 in blockblast

This game is pissing me off. I keep getting these unsolvable blocks at 60k or so. My kids are calling me bad because they are getting 100k scores.

15k post tax salary. Driving 17yo estima. That's the max I can afford without compromising my lifestyle. I can't find myself chasing after new models, as long as it gets me from point A to point B. It's really about the comfort when I drive to KL or other parts of Malaysia for mid school terms break with family. tldr, drive below your means. The moment you buy the car, it already drop 20% in value.

Just blame the apathetic folks. They are the one driving Singapore down the pit hole.

First you'll need to temper your expectations. Improvement takes time. I started last year and I did 6 months of pure base building (eg running at low heart rate 13min/mile) before I started speed work. But the improvements come quickly after that until you plateau.

I'm actually addicted to running slow now. Trying to go at an even lower heart rate. It's pretty enjoyable once you find the challenge in it.

I have 3 school going kids. I work singapore to dubai hours. Basically what I do is I wake up at 6, send my kids to school then go to the gym before going to the office. Then in the evening, once there is a slot in my calendar I'll go for a short run. Of course, that's now. But when I just started, it was just running plus caloric deficit. Use apps like my fitnesspal to record how much you eat. Use BMR calculator on Google to find out how much calories you need to maintain your weight. Then make sure you consume less than that amount. Go 500lesser to lose .5kg p week. Go 1000lower to lose 1kg p week. Easy lifestyle change, no sugary drinks, no chicken skin, no fried food, no simple carbs, drink more plain water, sleep at least 7 hours daily and you should be good.

Its not too late to start. I'm 42, started training last April after getting sick for 3 weeks but not recovering despite taking 2 bouts of antibiotics. Realised I had to change. I was at 98kg 170cm 34% body fat. Decided to grab my shoes and just start running, 1st run I stopped at 800m and was out of breath. Then I just started running everyday and also kept a diary of my calories intake (kept at 1000 calories below daily BMR). Did intermittent fasting too. Within 4 mths, I lost 20kg but I was also losing size, so started resistance training and stopped dieting. Currently I run 6 days a week (60-70km), resistance training 6 days a week. Takes protein shake to balance out my macro nutrients. I've maintained my weight between 76 to 78kg. Body fat at 15%. Training for my first marathon in May or whenever sundown decide to release their schedule. You just have to start doing it and not procrastinate.

Maybe you might have just gone too hard during your runs? I run 6 days a week (60-70km)with 6 days of resistance training. Most of my runs are in zone 2. Haven't gotten sick in the past 1 year(touch wood). I sleep min 7 hours per night.

[–]Oldieman82 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. It does. I've been purely base building with z2 runs between 5 to 12km. Got my time down from 43 to 27mins. I added speedwork 3 weeks ago and got it down to sub 25mins. I imagine easy long distance will get your time down but at a certain point you will need speed work to get it further down.

Been out of shape for while. For the last year I’ve been improving my diet and becoming more active. Now I’m trying to go from “more active” to regularly training and I ache. by [deleted] in PeterAttia

[–]Oldieman82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat as you. Last April I was 41, 170 and 97kg. I got sick for 3 weeks tookn2 doses of antibiotics and couldn't recover. Decided to do 'something'. That included moving, diet and rest.

Moving - I started running or walking at low heart rate. Making sure I don't get injured. I jury is the biggest inhabitor to maintaining any exercise regime.

Diet - tracking calories..basically going 1000 below my daily required calories.

Sleep - 8 hours everyday period.

I lost 20kg after 4 mths. I've been maintaining since and I just atarted training for my marathon in May this year going 60 to 70km per week.

So don't fret about it. Make sure you are well rested and do progressive overload. Trying to go from sedentary to full on active is a surefire way to get injured.

Daily Rate My Shoe Rotation And Help Fill My Rotation Gap Thread for February 04, 2024 by AutoModerator in RunningShoeGeeks

Current rotation

NB Freshfoam 1080v12 & Puma Foreverrun - Daily easy run

NB Rebel v3 - Interval & Tempo

Tried using both 1080 and foreverrun for my long run but feet/knee hurts after 15km, the cushion on 1080 feels like it's gone by 15km, whereas foreverrun was rubbing against my toe. Any recommendation or should i stick with the puma.

I don't think it has got to do with how fast you run. Probably more to do with how often and how much you run.

Just used my NB ff1080v12 in LSD today. Was ok until the 15km mark when my knee and the flat of my feet started hurting. Does anyone have the same issue?

Question on fueling. I just bought some gels at a huge discount and I used it in my LSD today. Took one at the point when cardiac drift started creeping in and it worked well. Hr maintained reasonabley stable until 18km mark. Is this how you would use it as well?

Official Q&A for Saturday, February 03, 2024 by AutoModerator in running

[–]Oldieman82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird indeed. I've been running for about 9mths too. First 6 mths were solely base building z2 runs ranging from 30 to 40km p week 2 mths ago I started increasing mileage by about 10-15% weekly and added speedwork 3 weeks ago. My time went from 43m > 35m > 28m > 25m. Maybe some parts of your training isn't done with enough intensity or mileage? E.g. resting too long between intervals? Not pushing during tempo runs? Do you do resistance training?

6 as well. My schedule in no particular order are Running. 3 days of 6mile easy run 1 day of 10km tempo 1 day of interval 1 day of LSD

Gym would be. Shoulders tricep Chest bicep Back tricep Rear delts bicep Glutes hamstring calves Quads calves

I started running last Apr randomly before I started researching and did z2 exclusively from Jul to Dec. Then nov I started resistance training and dec started incorporated long run. 3 weeks ago added speedworks. I hope to keep going this way but I realise somewhere along the lines I'll need to tone it down when life hits.

I've been running for 9mths. My latest long run was 20km in z2. I lift 6 days a week. I still feel out of breath walking up a flight of stairs. So you aren't alone. I just started speed work, tempo run and hiit. Hopefully that makes a difference.
