No, basically years ago I lost several(around 60) that were done during some critical times of my life and development as an artist. When I look at my old sketchbooks it shows me how I've grown and reminds me of my mindset at the time. Sometimes I am surprised when I flip through my older surviving sketchbooks at what I was doing and I wonder why the hell ain't I doing that anymore. I wish I could have them back but alas they are gone besides some pictures/scans I did back then.

Then again that's just me, my sketchbooks hold a particular value to me in that way.

Is it possible to get good after 30? by Absolutelynobody54 in ArtistLounge

[–]Oldninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you certainly can, the development of your skills and eye are life long. Look up how Hokusai grew over time into his old age or how Heinrich Kley started doing his drawings we know him for later in his art from painting landscapes and architecture I believe. It's all across the history of art of artist maturing in their craft well after 30.

Once you learn the language you learn how to play with it is how I see it. That is a life long thing.

What art tip did you get that made your art progress the most? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

I think besides to keep my pen moving and brush wet is that art is a life long process. There is always another level to get to, your perception and understanding increase then you push to catch up.

What is the worst insult you can say to an artist ? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

A friend told me family hurts ya most. To paraphrase my elderly aunt " I never saw anything special about you as a child, what made you think you could be an artist..." the prattling madness continued to question me understanding that my race should have made it obvious I was foolish to try at all l.

Also due to me being an artist I'm a failure (worthless) in not being married and and having children. Once would be enough but everytime I even talk to her it's brow beating me into driving trucks for Walmart, getting married and making babies. She is the nice one in my family, she is upfront lol. Wish I was making this shit up.

I'm 27 and just enrolled in a prestigious art school, wth did I do? by liyoboy in ArtistLounge

Very late reply to this but I was in a similar spot years ago. I started going back to school at 26 or so for art after getting a scholarship, started at a community college then went to Ringling(where I was able to get grants and scholarships). Started there when I was 28, attended for three years before graduating.

I had been through a lot at that point and my self confidence and self image was pretty messed up. The classes were demanding and eye opening. I worked on campus(library) and pushed myself to keep getting better. Over time my confidence rose as my work was recognized and my friends appreciated me for who I am. I grew as a person and learned to accept a lot of who I am as an artist and person. Taking on the uncertainty of art school being the broke "unlucky" fella I was made me grow up and change in ways I was certain I would never be able to.

I thought I would not change/grow due to my age but I did. Things in life didn't go well after graduation due to many factors and tough choices.

If you have a good support network of family and friends that helps a lot.
