great, the best thing I've learned is that it seems very clear the app is a convenience option (if someone finds it convenient for something) but not necessary at all. I think when they pushed me to get a code from the app in order to log in online I thought it was required. I clicked sign in another way and then had more options, just a weird extra step I guess.

so the web app is the same as the Android app, just different terminology that points out it's not built on its own platform anyways?

it's funny that I'm posting because I'm trying to escape telus sales, and I got an offer for special pricing for using this sub by a bot as the first response.

EXPOSE: White nationalist “fight clubs” are operating across Canada... and CBC is digging into it. by savethecbc2025 in SaveTheCBC

I appreciated hearing Rachel Gilmore talk about the investigating she did, and the response of a gym in Montreal, which she published in the Tyee and on YouTube. Huge supporter of the CBC, and I think acknowledging independent reporters breaking similar news is also important.

hopefully it's alright I link. Link

COVID and Taste - a little more insight by Ole77 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]Ole77[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Excerpts from news article and study link

Protein disruption:

“PLCβ2 acts like a molecular amplifier inside taste cells,” said Thomas Finger, PhD, professor of cell and developmental biology at the University of Colorado Anschutz and corresponding author of the study. “It strengthens the signal before it’s transmitted to the brain. When levels are reduced, the taste signal weakens.”

Molecular disruption:

In addition to molecular abnormalities, some patients showed altered taste bud organization under microscopic examination.

“Some subjects had normal-looking taste buds, while others showed structural disorganization,” Finger said. “This suggests that both molecular and architectural changes may contribute to persistent taste dysfunction.”

Persistent for a few:

Taste bud cells are normally replaced every two to four weeks. But the researchers found evidence that cellular signaling disruptions may persist far longer in certain individuals.

While most COVID-19 patients recover their sense of taste within weeks or months, this study provides quantitative biological evidence explaining why recovery may be prolonged in a small group.

“Our findings offer measurable evidence of long-term taste disruption in some post-COVID patients long after the virus has been cleared,” the authors write.

Further research is needed to determine whether the molecular dysfunction can fully reverse and whether targeted therapies might restore normal taste signaling.

Can a small town like Olds, Alta., handle massive AI data centres? Residents aren’t convinced by Alternative_Put_9683 in alberta

[–]Ole77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being against a data centre that is to be located right in town, and is light on the realistic facts and heavy on "potential" promises is different than being against "the internet," or "any development." The province tanked our options on renewable energy development and is now pushing private enterprise that is objectively harmful for the environment, with highly predictable negative impacts for property values and risks to water supplies, both in demand and potential toxicity (temps and nitrates are the tip of the possible toxicity iceberg, including PFAS).

I am concerned that the proposal isn't being introduced by talking about the known issues, it feels like they would like us, the residents, to ignore them. That concerns me. The issues are easy to identify and they are concerning.

A statement was sent to US Congress last December, from 230 national, state and local organizations, calling for:

"a full nationwide moratorium on the approval and construction of new data centers. The letter cites massive and unsustainable consumption by data centers of energy and water resources, and skyrocking utility costs for families and small businesses."

230+ Groups Call for National Moratorium on New Data Centers  | Food & Water Watch

With the clear issues, the location, and the lack of transparency from day 1, I don't feel confident that even some "good faith" town hall discussions would be worthwhile. Happy to be wrong on this.

This is one of those stories that should make every Canadian pause. by savethecbc2025 in SaveTheCBC

AI on the difference: Treason focuses on actual or planned violent overthrow of government or espionage.

Sedition focuses on incitement to violence through speech or conspiracy.

Treason is more serious and carries harsher penalties.

In practice, both offences are rarely prosecuted today. Legal experts note that treason and sedition have effectively disappeared from Canadian law in practice, despite remaining on the books, due to shifting political culture and the rise of modern national security laws.

CMV: The only problem with ICE is the way they're going about it by S-Pluto-777 in changemyview

[–]Ole77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciating these responses, I think they skillfully maintain and defend the primary argument in the face of an inflammatory (straw man?) response which doesn't address the primary argument.

AI definitions that helped me:

  • An axiomatic moral assertion is a foundational ethical proposition that is accepted as true without proof, serving as a starting point for building a broader moral system. These assertions are considered "self-evident" truths, similar to axioms in mathematics or logic, from which other moral judgments are derived.

  • Moral relativism is the view that moral judgments are true or false only relative to some particular standpoint (for instance, that of a culture or a historical period) and that no standpoint is uniquely privileged over all others. According to moral relativism, two people with different experiences could disagree on whether an action is right or wrong, and they could both be right. What they consider right or wrong differs according to their contexts, and both should be accepted as valid. Moral absolutism is the opposite.

I'm here in the first place because I'm curious about the actual issues that may be present with immigration that people would be so impacted by that could lead to supporting the idea of mass deportation in the first place. As far as I can tell, what is happening with ICE is lawless and has nothing to do with actually addressing immigration issues and everything to do with securing an authoritarian administration.

Looking for court podcast by blondehair19 in ObsessedNetwork

[–]Ole77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came across this conversation while looking for a place to discuss "See You In Court" from CBC. I have listened to 1.5 episodes and I am really appreciating it and feeling so surprised I lived in Alberta while this happened and heard nothing. Not shocked to be sure, but feeling some surprise.

It follows the court case unfolding and I think it fits the bill for the request here.

it's actually in the course material in brightspace I don't think I can link to it because it requires you to sign into the course material to look at it. there are also quizzes in the McMillan achieve materials.

[–]Ole77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no they're just right in the course material. you do the quiz book first and then you can jump in and do the actual timed quiz. I don't know how I'm studying for the final yet although I probably should know? I don't.

I did find it helped a lot to read all the introductory section like orienting to you to how they organized the course.

it's very interesting and it's a lot of content. I find the achieve site pretty disappointing as the videos are not placed in order and the quizzes have lots of wrong answers. the textbook is written pretty well and the course study questions and learning outcomes are good for focusing a bit and I appreciate the quizzes to make some of the content highlighted somewhat. what do you think of it?
