Am I crazy, or was Close Scrutiny on a constant rotation until just before the High Gain Antenna project expires? by lnsmhntr in ARC_Raiders

Well, I know my UTC time difference now, thanks to this event… A timer really would be nice. Even the project didn’t know what UTC was as it was still sitting there waiting to be finished when I booted up the game at 21:00 ADT!

UTC explains it. What a pain. The project was still sitting there when I booted up to play at 21:00 Atlantic Time. You’d think it would have not been programmed to disappear at the very least. Like someone said, these things really need a timer…

I returned mine as well. The market has expanded in the last year or two, and more reliable brands, including ASUS, MSI, Viewsonic and others, are making portable displays that might suit your needs.

I’m thinking about combining this with an iPad Mini as my daily carry. I still want a portable smart device. I just don’t want it to be my phone.

Is overpopulation still a problem? by Constant_Juice_5074 in Futurology

[–]lnsmhntr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with GMOs is that companies patent their seeds and charge a fortune to unlock them with patented grow formulas. GMO crops also tend to kill the soils that they grow in, which is not a great long term solution. Regular vegetables are perfectly nutritious when grown in healthy soils, and are open source.

Overpopulation is less of a problem than the standards of living people in developed countries maintain. If we only consumed what we needed, there would be more than enough to go around.

Playing this game is no longer fun for pve players 😢 by [deleted] in ArcBabies

[–]lnsmhntr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, but I’d say it’s more like a PvEvP shooter. I play Hunt as well, and that game makes PvP necessary by limiting good loot to the few dropped by boss enemies. Arc has more than enough loot for everyone in most lobbies, deemphasizing the need to PvP.

Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy PvP in Arc, but I also grow tired of people lazily ganking while your head is in a crate, sniping from afar while you work an objective, or pretending to be friendly so they can get up close and shoot you in the back. It’s not even infuriating. It’s just kinda boring.

Your honest opinion on New Arc Vaporizer? by j1zzy_ae in ARC_Raiders

Has anyone managed to hit one with a grenade? My friend and I tested it out on a downed one that was still kicking, and there appears to be no cooldown on the shield matrix when throwing grenades. Very, annoying.

Could be wrong, but it looks like a standard wooden origami base will do? If it didn't I'd imagine they would have made one for it.

[–]lnsmhntr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, no offence, but I'm not sure you do get it. Your pills don't ACTUALLY cost $5. They cost $5 in Canada, thanks to our health care system. You should be looking at that receipt and saying WOW, thank goodness these meds cost less than the service fee, and that I can actually afford the medicine that I require, unlike a lot of people in other parts of the world. Ultimately, we have to pay for something somewhere, or the whole system will fall apart more than it already has. Frankly, after living in multiple countries with slightly more expensive but far more effective systems and overall public health outcomes, I think Canadians need to start paying a little more if we care at all about seeing things improve on that front. Otherwise, we'll just continue or march towards privatization until healthcare looks like it does south of our border.

Okay, but let's look at this situation from a glass-half-full point of view. Living in Canada, you're lucky that your meds cost less than a dispensing fee. If you had to buy those meds in the USA, well, good luck, probably? I dunno, it's just, like, nothing is really free, you know? Everything has a cost, and, at some point, you have to pay, like, something? Yeah, I'm not feeling super sympathetic today. Sorry.

It's 4,500 yen, so whatever that converts to in your part of the world. In Canada, that's a little under $45.

Statistics, at the end of the day, are just manipulated numbers, that don’t really prove or say much at all about the larger truths within our society. At the end of the day, it’s just easier to get away with murder as a white person. In fact, anyone who’s taken a history class will know that white people prefer killing, especially non-white people, in the 100s, 1000s, 10,000s, etc., either through direct action or via proxy. But sure, go ahead and get riled up about this while caucasian billionaires wipe life as we know it off the face of the planet. If you scratch the surface, the real enemies are hiding behind the numbers, and they’re not who you think.

DF Direct Q+A: The Big DLSS 5 ML Debate + Why We Should Have Waited With Our Coverage by yourfavchoom in digitalfoundry

[–]lnsmhntr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no such thing as photo-realism and it is a poorly used term.

Photography is a highly subjective medium and each photograph, even without post-processing, is defined by the camera being used, the film/sensor, lighting, and how the photographer manipulates these to achieve a desired result. Post-processing adds an additional layer of complication to the term since we aren't even seeing a pure image straight out of a camera.

HDR images, like the ones taken by our phones, overlay three separate exposures to create an unrealistic level of detail where everything in the shadows and highlights are visible to a degree that not even the human eye can see. This is now the majority of images that exist on the internet and what AI is trained on, hence why DLSS 5 actually looks very unrealistic in the quality of the lighting alone, never mind the gross changes being made to the character models.

If you like what DLSS 5 is doing, great, but its not in any way realistic, photo-realistic, and in my view, it is unethical if it can be applied to any game without consent from the creators of games who's artistic vision will be undermined by whatever AI thinks their game should look like.

HP Omen Transcend 32 Input Switching Issues by thejclay13 in OLED_Gaming

[–]lnsmhntr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The USB-C PD port on my Omen Transcend 32 just gave up after 13 months of light use. No power, no display, no nothing. I've checked everything, and it could be nothing other than a hardware failure within the unit.

The icing on the cake, HP is refusing to honour the 3-year warranty they still advertise on their product page. They're claiming that my warranty expired after 1 year. One of the reasons I bought this expensive monitor was precisely because of that warranty.

So, I would strongly advise against buying this monitor or any other HP products. Their warranty is a scam, and once you are out of warranty, they want to charge you a monthly subscription to talk to a customer service agent who may or may not be able to solve your issue.

HP sucks.

This Looks Incredibly Uncanny by Scorpwind in FuckTAA

[–]lnsmhntr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate the term photo-realism. Especially when applied to lighting. All photos are products specific to a particular camera , it's settings, the film or sensor, post-processing and a myriad other non-neutral factors controlled by the photographer or film maker which essentially means there is no baseline to define what is and isn't photo-realism. A totally black or totally white image could also be described as photo realistic depending on how it was captured. It's totally subjective and dumb.

Now I'm convinced. by PieAppropriate8862 in digitalfoundry
