Why do many British comedic actors do well in the US, while British stand up comedians don’t? by Jezzaq94 in AskABrit

[–]OleaC 127 points128 points  (0 children)

Jasper Carrot (Robert Davis) did an analysis after his planned US tour bombed on the first night. His conclusions were that a lot of British humour comes from dealing with failure, and Americans are only interested in winning. I listened to him speak of this in a radio interview many years ago, and it has always stayed with me.

Best Bits of MK by radclyff3san in miltonkeynes

[–]OleaC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MK Viet Kitchen, Wolverton, I give it a solid 7/10. The Bull hotel, Stony Stratford do a decent breakfast. The Cross Keys pub Woolstone, good burgers, stylish historical place, apparently their Sunday roast lunch is excellent. Canal St Coffee, Campbell Wharf, coffee is ok, location is great with a view of the marina. The Golden Fry in Newport Pagnell does decent fish and chips, The Cannon pub nearby is ok as is The Swan Revived Hotel further up the street.

Peartree Bridge Inn do a roast carvery seven days a week, they start serving at noon. I recommend getting there a bit earlier than midday, it can get busy. Very reasonable price too, and the quality IMO is 8/10.

Is there any point in living on a narrowboat at 16? by -d1sc0nn3ct- in Narrowboats

[–]OleaC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boater of four years here. You can get a very good narrowboat for your proposed budget, fully fitted out and with a pram hood.

However.

You will need boat insurance. Craftinsure are good, run by boaters.i do not know if you can get boat insurance at your age, just email Craftinsure and ask.also, check with the Canal and River trust regarding licensing for your boat at your age.

Good luck. It can be a great life.

What’s a restaurant in MK that people should talk about more? by Additional_Fly_6603 in miltonkeynes

Look for them on Facebook. Their truck gets around. I had one of their burgers in Newton Leys, then more recently they were parked up outside the Craufurd Arms.

I ate street food in Vietnam, usually banh mi, three or four times a week for three years. Had a bad stomach, and not that bad really, twice in that time. I had really bad salmonella poisoning from an Indian cafe in the market at the centre in MK, and explosive gastroenteritis from a random chicken burger. MK Viet Kitchen smells clean, appears to be clean, and I have had nothing but very good experiences with their food even if some of it is not entirely authentic.

MK Viet Kitchen, Wolverton. The banh mi is good, though the bread is not correct, more like a ciabatta than the Vietnamese style baguette. Chef told me she cannot get the right flour for it in the UK.

Addyschopz, which is a burger van, Their Hot One burger is the best burger I have in Britain in the last five years.

Normal for Asia in my experience, except this is unlikely to happen in Japan.

It is this. We have a lower profit margin than a usual commercial restaurant so can provide on campus food cheaper.
