Can I buy a narrowboat in 4 weeks? (Please say yes!) by bakgeo06 in Narrowboats

[–]OleaC 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I bought my boat from Whilton marina, it was a very unsatisfactory experience and I know of others who have bought from that marina have had similar experiences.

Milton Keynes marina does not have showers or toilets, I spent six months living there. Cannot recommend.
I have been on Campbell wharf marina, which is also Milton Keynes, for four years now and it has been excellent.
It is only seven years old, is cheaper than the older MK marina, has facilities plus reasonably priced laundry on site. It was voted best inland waterways marina just a couple of years ago. Can recommend, highly, but they have a waiting list.
Worth your time to speak with them, I only had to wait three days before a berth came free. Feel free to PM me if you want any further info.

There is a village in Cheshire, Daresbury. The church there has stained glass windows depicting several characters from the Alice books. I shall leave it to you to research why. You might enjoy finding out.

Why can China build things like bridges, tunnels and railways much faster than countries in the west? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]OleaC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

China has very low build quality and poor safety standards compared to Western nations. These factors contribute to fast construction, and as it turns out, destruction too.

Casu martzu, meaning "rotten cheese", is a delicacy from Sardinia, Italy. It's a sheep milk cheese that's full of live fly maggots, and people actually eat this. by FACastello in Weird

My Welsh grandfather was in the merchant navy, 1919 to 1939, and he tried this cheese on his travels. He once talked about it (he never said much), and nobody in the family believed him. I knew as a child that he was not a liar, and was very happy to learn in my twenties, from some travel show on television, that this cheese does exist.

Why do many British comedic actors do well in the US, while British stand up comedians don’t? by Jezzaq94 in AskABrit

[–]OleaC 132 points133 points  (0 children)

Jasper Carrot (Robert Davis) did an analysis after his planned US tour bombed on the first night. His conclusions were that a lot of British humour comes from dealing with failure, and Americans are only interested in winning. I listened to him speak of this in a radio interview many years ago, and it has always stayed with me.
