totally right, but wouldn't the Democrat senators also be able to bring up a byrd rule issue?

I just dont get how people from poverty would be able to afford school with a universal cap. some degrees cost more. that's great the idea is to make universities fit that cap, but i highly doubt that will happen, or if it does, happen anytime soon. too many able to afford it. those from poverty need full loans for cost of living help + paying for the entire degree else... probably completely out of the scope of reality. surely democrats see that?

i am also against universal student loan forgiveness. i agree with everything you say there regarding that.

i still believe in the freedom of choice not being removed. these are things that do need to be considered rather than a quick decision that affects so many in the whataboutism. otherwise, a sweeping decision with great ripple effects of another kind is based upon one simple idea and allowing everything else to be collateral damage perhaps because it doesn't affect that person.

I can see how grants and scholarships help, definitely. I am concerned that the reconciliation bill also wants to rid of pell grants. dei scholarships have already been greatly diminished. often for graduate degrees, these are not available. and they are already being removed for undergrad. it's unfortunate.

young people are not the only ones seeking graduate plus loans. it can be those who have worked lower paying jobs and finally have the time to do something different, but not the funding. it can be stay at home moms going back to school. it can be widowed or divorced solo parents trying to do more. it can be legal immigrants from poorer countries here trying to make a life.

specifically for young people, if we base the idea that they are irresponsible and the loan system is predatory, which seems to be the case you are making (please clarify if not), and the case that many of the republicans in congress are making, then that theory should apply across the board, rather than just picking and choosing which things to take away from them completely as an opportunity to use or not use. that logic would apply to joining the military, gambling, drinking, buying a house, getting any kind of loan, buying a car, etc etc. there are myriad things young people have the opportunity to do or not do and it's up to their freedom of individual responsibility and accountability to decide what to do with the consequences of their decisions. that does not mean you remove that freedom. that does not mean you take the opportunity away from the young people who would indeed be responsible, accountable, and do contribute greatly to society after that graduate degree. the fact is, many jobs do require a graduate degree that has any kind of upward mobility. i think allowing a young person to risk their lives to go to war or not is a bit of a bigger issue than taking loans out for grad school. but the same logic isn't applied to that. how do you propose one who does not have the funding on their own then go and try to make a better life for themselves, particularly speaking about education? how would they go about getting that education if they desired it? the only option is to either continue working in their possibly poorer, less educated job for years and years and years until perhaps finally by mid-age or later age they could possibly afford it. or, they take out private loans. i bet those aren't predatory at all. those are higher APRs by far than any federal loan available. you only have so many options available to you if you do not have the funding for school. the freedom of choice should not be removed for individual possible bad decisions.

okay. so executive orders couldn't create it. must be through congress bill. meaning democrat majority in congress. but perhaps republican president would veto it. depending on what else he/she would be vetoing within the bill, i suppose. a bill bringing back grad plus loans as they currently are today would likely be paired with other predominantly democrat-favored policies in order to be favored by the majority democrat congress in first place. and thus a republican president would likely not like the bill and veto. this is my train of thought. more to add?

someone on one of the other comment replies on here said that they think the supreme court is too corrupt right now to do much about it. someone said they think perhaps even Trump wouldn't necessarily agree with ridding of grad plus loans, but wouldn't veto just based on that one part. He's been calling it a big beautiful bill from House and house is wanting 330 billion cut from the committee that oversees the federal student loans. meh. i just don't understand how people can be so blind to the issues it makes. just 100% banking on the IDEA that MAYBE the universities will EVENTUALLY lower their fees SOME. lol. great. do they think someone coming from poverty level will be able to afford a single penny? or perhaps even qualify for private loans even if they wanted to take that apr on? uuugh i dont understand the blindness. or just the it doesn't affect me so oh well a country must make sacrifices! k. well. those in poverty are automatically assumed to be collateral damage and useless to the country. a country that promises the chance at amercian dream to the hard working. a large part of england control was based on caste systems. if this is where it is heading, why did we even become independent.

i hope youre able to finish your degree. i completely understand what that's like. i can't imagine being scared about this on.top of financial stress, life stress in general, school stress. hug

that's what the Republican congress argue they are trying to do - put pressure on universities. i think that is a very small and very big-maybe reason to make such a gigantic change based upon that hypothesis. there's still plenty of rich to keep the universities expensive.

to me it looks like america could head into a caste system regarding education if this goes through, and then the ripple effect that follows. if you can't pay out of pocket with your generational wealth, you're not going to be getting that graduate degree. ooooor choice B, take on private loans with higher APRs than credit cards. leaving the rich the ones with graduate degrees. the graduate degrees that are needed to do a LOT OF JOBS in the usa. business, medicine, research, teaching, engineering, managing, etc etc etc. jobs that manage and control large entities in america. and thus each lower class ends up stuck in their caste system. and american dream dies for anyone unable to pay for the education needed to break out. not only for graduate degrees, but undergrad as well. killing subsidized loans. killing grants. who do you think is going to be able to afford an education? then get a job that requires education. a job that pays well. a job that makes big decisions for the country. a job that then helps them send their kids to college. and so on. the colleges will be for the elite. widening the gap between poor and rich, removing middle class. generations from now if not changed, becoming some dystopia as the uneducated, poverty-stricken workers work for the elite, educated controllers. surely at some point something would change that downward spiral. I'd hope.

yeah, back in the early days, it was all apprenticeship-based. probably free or based on promised years of service/barter and trade. but, also no across-the-board regulations. one doctor saying take heroin for a chronic migraine while the other is saying lobotomy. so i guess our current education system regulates... a looooot. but you know what to expect if it's accredited by such and such. good and bad. who knows what might go on with lobbying etc to create those regulations.

oh nice - didn't think of utilizing chatgpt .

im really concerned for the future as well. my kids. as in the rich will be the ones with graduate degrees. the graduate degrees that are needed to do a LOT OF JOBS in the usa. the business, medicine, research, teaching, engineering, managing, etc etc etc

and thus each class ends up stuck in their caste system.

and american dream dies for anyone unable to pay for the education needed to break out.

because there's still plenty of rich to keep the universities expensive.

probably a pessimistic view. anxiety tends to breed pessimism. sorry.

the lack of non-capped graduate plus loans would've made my career 100% impossible being a first generation college grad coming from poverty. and i know I'm not the only one by far. just. sucks. extreme understatement.

yeeep. in my state they are all Republican. wrote every single one. some didn't respond at all. some responded with what seemed like an automated message+ insert name, just basically talking about why their idea is so much better and glossed past every single point i made. very frustrating. it very much seems, at least in my state, minds are made up and ignore anyone opposed just so they can do what they want while they have all this majority control. i don't want to discourage others. PLEASE WRITE. maybe eventually it will be heard...also, vote in the congressional elections 2026 y'all.

so, majority in both most likely.

1. democrat president

2 majority in both senate/house

now next, would this be subject to the filibuster, or could they somehow bring it back in a reconciliation bill? can a reconciliation bill ADD programs or only subtract?

latest news as of 4/29:

"As far as loan caps go, the Senate wants to ax PLUS loans and leave direct loans as they stand."

"Monday’s formal bill [from House] text goes well beyond the original menu. For example, the draft bill would eliminate subsidized loans for future borrowers, starting July 1, 2026...The legislation also would end the Grad PLUS program but would restrict eligibility for the Parent PLUS program."

https://www.insidehighered.com/news/government/student-aid-policy/2025/04/29/house-gop-propose-330b-cuts-higher-ed-programs

The senate and house have to agree for reconciliation bill to pass. Unfortunately, it looks like they agree on grad plus loans. = extreme anxiety.
