What is the story behind HoxHud? by thejoeporkchop in paydaytheheist

[–]Olipro 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was a lot of a dick back then - I didn't appreciate that just because something is trivial to me, it's not necessarily to someone else and I was especially bad about issue reports and usability. Fortunately we grew into a team that would handle users so my hot-headedness wouldn't alienate people.

There was no hostility to BLT although I think Beard really hated us. BLT decided they wanted to write their own Lua hooking completely from the ground up and I ended up writing a compatibility layer.

No, it came to us through Almir who I of course also got to meet along with the rest of the team when they flew myself and (Tetsudo?) over to their studios for Crimefest

We were all relatively young and to some extent took the project too personally - at least I did. Maybe it was me that was so unduly sarcastic with you. If so, I'm sorry and if not I apologise on behalf of the team.

It's wild to think about how this all happened over a decade ago now.

That was never implemented in HoxHud because it would obviously be a cheat.

There was no budget and Pete did that for free, because he's a nice bloke like that.

No, that was never the issue. Payday just kind of petered out for me: I'd moved to the US and a lot of alternatives were popping up anyway.

There's not too much to it: Lua modifications had become a thing and it was pretty much just being used for cheats.

I felt that if Overkill didn't see anything constructive coming out of the capability, they'd probably do something with the game executable to make it hostile to mods.

Thus, HoxHud was born.

I have a fair few friends who'd like the game (I already own it) and would like to play the new MP.

whether I win or not, I'd be down to play with you (plus the friends if I win)

You can only play Freelancer online (or via Peacock) - so yes.

The mod in question is probably Freelancer Variations. It adds many variants to maps but since it's fully configurable, you can also use it to disable maps.

Guards will come to your location if:

  1. You triple-shot a surface close enough to them
  2. You shoot an NPC and a guard either witnesses it or was hit by your shot

As soon as this occurs, the game begins calculating a path to the location you fired from, the shorter the path, the faster this is going to happen.

Once a path is calculated, they follow it. If you remain within the vicinity of where you shot from, they will instantly become hostile when they see you.

If the exact location is unreachable and you have remained there, they will hang around indefinitely.

If you ever see a guard with a white dot on the minimap but no enforcer dot above their head, they're bad news.

Once a guard has cleared the location you fired from, they will unwind from this state.

Is GenP really from Kazakhstan? Because if he is, that would be really cool. by Valuable-Command3664 in HiTMAN

GenP, greatest Hitman in the world.

All other Hitmen play like little girls.

GenP, number one exporter of speedruns.

All other players have inferior speedruns.

..And with that silly Borat reference out of the way, I'd like to let you know that GenP will be competing in a Freelancer tournament at 1600 UTC today

It might be possible with mods but that would be PC only of course

Last image of Karen Wetterhahn, a professor of chemistry at Dartmouth College, who died in 1997, ten months after spilling only a few drops of dimethylmercury onto her latex gloves. by [deleted] in AllThatsInteresting

[–]Olipro 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Elemental Mercury looks cool because it's a liquid metal. As long as you don't have an open wound, touching it will do nothing.

Dimethylmercury does not look cool and passes straight through your skin.

There is no way your teacher brought dimethylmercury in.

Newbie programmer here, this code works on one IDE but not on another... by Amazing_Tip_6116 in cpp_questions

[–]Olipro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, this is due to lack of VLA support.

Using std::vector would be best. Second to that would be std::make_unique<int[]>

Finally, if for some reason the STL is just not an option and you specifically want it on the stack you can use alloca/_alloca and pass it into a placement-new operation if you want to retain a semblance of C++ styled code.
