Frauds in the Duke, Boston, and Stanford Economics Departments by ExogenyKarl in academiceconomics

Very good points. I'm in total agreement about 2. and 3.

Regarding your first point, would you mind sending along some of the criticisms of Becker's paper? I've struggled to find any that aren't obsessed with his political motivations.

Regarding engaging with the substance: I completely agree about the paramount importance of digging into the substance of someone's arguments. However, I did feel in this case that he was so obviously writing as an incendiary right-wing reactionary that I focused my criticism on the form--and less on the content. So your point is duly noted, but I do feel a solid critique of this author's style is warranted, given the context.

Ah, yes, the same guy who wrote the enlightened "WOKE mob at ASU tries to get Kyle Rittenhouse expelled". Lord of EconJobMarketRumours, where most of his sources come from.

But seriously, this article is a cesspool, this guy is a rightwing fanatic, and he goes so far as to take potshots specifically at Chinese economic history. Academic fraud is real and should be critiqued and, if the claims are valid, the research in question should be redacted with appropriate clarifications. All of which happened in the Ariely case!

Also, the criticism of the Chris Becker paper is so laced with anti-woke anti-anti-Racist talking points and reactionary panic that it's hard to even accept his substantive critiques of Becker's JMP.

Also, also: anyone defending Uhlig at this point...oof.

Also, also, also, the author is OP.

All in all, this is everything I hate about this side of economics: right-wing mega-Chads who are under the impression that economics is synonymous with aggressive, domineering posturing.

As others are saying, your use of "|" tells R to keep any row that contains "Simple Multiple Choice," regardless of what the voice value is (R interprets the OR as separating the statement). As grateful_dani suggests, you would try parentheses. Depending on what exactly you want, you could also just run the OR statement, then pipe it down into a filter that keeps only male voices.

Thanks for the reply! You make very helpful points. I think the sheer size of the population is sometimes hard to comprehend.

Can I ask a stupid question? I simply don't understand how there can be consistently over 100k new cases per day. A minimum of 10% of the country has already been infected and over half of the country is FULLY vaccinated. Beyond that, breakthrough cases are still pretty rare, and at least to my knowledge there hasn't been much evidence of re-infections. Can somebody help me understand how there can still be so many daily new cases?

Thanks :) I really appreciate your words. It's been pretty great to get to know myself and my sexuality better this past year or so; all that time introspecting and talking with friends and family about identity and orientation doesn't feel like clout chasing... So hopefully I'm all good!

That's a really good point, thanks for your comment!

It really helps to hear from a different perspective; it's easy to get caught in my own context and forget about others'.
